Andrasik, Reinhold Toss Three-Hitters in Home Sweep of Malone

Laker pitchers have allowed one run or fewer in seven of last nine games

A pair of GVSU righthanders - senior Sara Andrasik and sophomore Courtney Reinhold - kept Malone's bats quiet on Friday afternoon (Apr. 22) in Allendale, as the Lakers swept their fourth consecutive GLIAC doubleheader. Both Laker pitchers allowed just three hits during their outings and Grand Valley State picked up a pair of victories over the Pioneers, 5-0 and 6-1.

The doubleheader sweep marks the eighth and ninth straight wins for GVSU, as the Lakers improve to 32-8 overall and 17-5 in GLIAC play. Grand Valley State matches its win total from last season with the 32 victories. The Lakers have not had a longer winning streak since April 20 to May 4, 2013, when that GVSU team won 12 straight games during its run to the Division II College World Series.

Malone falls to 13-26 on the year and 3-20 in GLIAC action.

Andrasik and Reinhold were terrific on Friday, as each pitcher allowed just three base hits and neither hurler issued a walk. Andrasik recorded seven strikeouts, while Reinhold added four punchouts. Reinhold gave up just one run in the sixth inning, ending the 12-inning scoreless streak for the Laker righthanders.

During the team's nine-game win streak, Grand Valley State's pitchers have allowed one run or fewer in seven of the nine contests. Five of those nine wins have been shutouts and the team ERA during the winning streak is 1.13 (10 earned runs in 62.0 innings).

Game one appeared to be a blowout early, as Andrasik set Malone down in order on just six pitches and the GVSU offense plated four runs in the first inning. It all started with an opposite field triple for junior lefty Janae Langs, who notched the stand-up three-bagger, her first of the season. She scored on a sharp single from sophomore catcher Kaylie Rhynard for the game's first run.

Three straight walks gave the Lakers their second run, as freshman Shannon Flaherty's free pass made the score 2-0. Junior Kelsey Dominguez added a bloop RBI single to center field and sophomore Teagan Shomin notched a hard-earned RBI, using a hit by pitch to bring in GVSU's fourth run of the frame.

Andrasik kept rolling, as she went 1-2-3 in the second and third innings. Flaherty opened the bottom of the third inning by blasting her fourth homer of the season to left center field, a solo shot that gave the Lakers a 5-0 cushion.

With two outs in the fourth inning, Andrasik's bid for a fourth career no-hitter ended on a single to left field from Malone's Emily Isla. Andrasik responded by retiring the next six batters. When Isla came up to the plate in the sixth with runners on second and third base, Andrasik induced a groundout to escape her only trouble on the afternoon.

To end the game in the seventh inning, Andrasik used a looking strikeout, a groundout, and a flyout to earn her third shutout of the season and 16th of her career. She retired Malone in order in five of the seven innings during her 93-pitch effort. Andrasik is now 11-2 on the season.

The only player in the game with more than one hit was Rhynard, who was 3-for-4 with three singles. Langs' triple and Flaherty's homer were two of the three extra-base hits in the game. Neither team committed an error.

Malone pitcher Kari Hall logged 138 pitches in game one, so it may have been a little surprising that Hall returned to the circle for game two, as well. Just like the first game, the Lakers offense got going early in game two.

After the first two GVSU batters were retired, juniors Jenna Lenza and Ellie Balbach both ripped singles to center field. Senior McKenze Supernaw came through with a clutch two-out double, bringing Lenza and Balbach all the way around for an early 2-0 lead.

Similar to Andrasik's start, Reinhold set down Malone in order in the bottom of the first inning. To begin the second inning, Dominguez led off with a double to right center field and moved to third base on a sharp single to left field from sophomore Tanner Kiessel. Dominguez scored on a Lenza groundout, making the score 3-0.

Reinhold kept rolling, earning a pair of strikeouts in the second inning and working around a leadoff error in the third frame. She retired six of the seven batters she faced in the fourth and fifth frames, with GVSU pushing the lead to 4-0 on a Flaherty RBI single, which scored Balbach after her one-out double.

Malone scored its only run of the day in the sixth inning on a groundout, but the Lakers responded with two more runs in the seventh. After Langs was hit by a pitch and Lenza tagged a sharp one-out single to left field, Balbach smacked a double to left center, scoring both Langs and Lenza for a 6-1 advantage.

Reinhold worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to finish off a terrific pitching twinbill for the Lakers. She improves to 7-3 on the season with the three-hitter.

Lenza and Balbach both went 3-for-4 in game two, with Lenza scoring twice and Balbach driving in two runs, giving her a team-high 31 RBI. Balbach also doubled twice to take over the team lead with 13 two-baggers, one ahead of Supernaw, who went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI. GVSU outhit Malone, 12-3.

The Lakers stay at home again on Saturday, as GVSU hosts Walsh at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the first game, the team's three seniors - Andrasik, Supernaw, and Chelsea Horvath - will be honored on the annual Senior Day.
