Golden Bears fall on the road at Rockhurst

Concordia remains in Kansas City area for Sunday game at MWSU

Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Concordia-St. Paul (1-2) dropped a non-conference road game on Friday evening 10-5 at Rockhurst University (1-0). The Golden Bears remain in the Kansas City area, heading to St. Joseph, Missouri on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game at Missouri Western State.

The Hawks wasted no time grabbing their first lead in their season and home opener, scoring just under three minutes into action on their way to a 4-0 first quarter lead. They scored again early in the second quarter and would lead by at least four the rest of the way.

Concordia freshman Morgan Haapala put in her first career goal at 10:07 to play in the second quarter on a free position shot and senior goalie Candace McDole blanked the Hawks for the rest of the half, as the teams played to a 1-1 third quarter tie with RU holding a 5-1 lead at the half.

Rockhurst would build its lead to as many as seven, scoring three times early in the third quarter for an 8-1 lead just over three minutes into the third quarter. From there, the Golden Bears outscored the Hawks 4-2 the rest of the way as McDole shut Rockhurst down with no goals allowed in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Lauren Sheets continued her early season scoring surge with three goals in the second half, one of them assisted by Haapala as each player had a three-point performance.

McDole concluded a busy day in the cage by racking up 11 saves and a .524 save percentage while facing 35 shots from the Hawks attack.

Concordia's defense had 10 caused turnovers as Rockhurst turned the ball over 21 times on the day, and helped RU to 19-27 on clear attempts. Sheets and freshman Kayleigh Nelson each had a pair of caused turnovers, with Sheets also collecting a pair of ground balls.

But the Golden Bears gave it away even more times, committing 27 turnovers with RU credited with 18 caused turnovers and a 21-11 advantage in ground balls while stopped CSP to 18-24 on clear attempts. Freshman Susie Monson led CSP with three ground balls on the evening. 

Rockhurst was led by Logan Derosia's four-goal performance while Dani Mabry had five points on three goals and two assists.

With today's result, the Golden Bears fall to the Hawks for the first time in the all-time series with the programs having squared off five times.
