Women's Tennis Clinches GLIAC Regular-Season Championship with Win at Davenport

The Warriors will be the top seed for the conference tournament next weekend.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (16-5 overall, 7-0 GLIAC) capped off a perfect run through the conference with a 7-0 shutout at Davenport (12-11 overall, 1-6 GLIAC) to win the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship on Saturday inside the MVP SportsPlex in Grand Rapids.

WSU, with its 16-5 overall record in addition to its spotless league ledger, will receive the No. 1 seed and a bye in the opening round of next weekend's GLIAC Tournament.  The Warriors have now won eight in a row to conclude the regular season.

The title was Wayne State's second in three seasons for the regular season.  The team also claimed the championship for the 2022 campaign.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold did enough to triumph in doubles, as the squad collected two wins to move ahead 1-0 on the afternoon.

DU claimed the first completed match, however, as Isabella Carofano and Louise Hosking shut out Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) by a 6-0 score at the third flight.

The Warriors' No. 11-ranked doubles duo of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) recorded a 6-0 win over Amy Bloch and Angelica Montano at the No. 1 spot, while Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) toppled the Panthers' Skye Vandeleur and Hermon Mikael 6-4 to serve as the clinching doubles point.

Arafat and Szpakowska tallied their eighth straight doubles win together and finished the regular season with a 16-2 ledger (14-2 at the second flight).

SINGLES
WSU left no doubt in singles, as it won all six contests to notch its seventh 7-0 blanking of the spring season and fifth on the eight-match win streak.

Arafat finished first at the second flight with her 6-3, 6-2 triumph against Bloch, while Ruyssen, the No. 34-ranked singles player in Division II, posted the same set scores in her win over Mikael at the No. 1 position.

Similarly, Komar had victories of 6-4 and 6-2 in downing Vandeleur at the No. 3 spot.

Szpakowska shut out Carofano 6-0 in the first set at the fourth flight, then won 6-3 to complete her triumph.  The sophomore's victory served as the clinching point of the contest for the Green and Gold.

In the third win of the match by the same set scores, Gorgidze was able to handle Hosking 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.

Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) squared off with Kumiko Yamaguchi at the sixth flight for her first action of the day.  The freshman was able to defeat her Davenport opponent with scores of 6-4 and 6-3 to complete the shutout of the Panthers.

With the results on Saturday, several Warriors extended their winning streaks in singles - including Arafat (eight), Szpakowska (eight), Ruyssen (seven), Gorgidze (six), and Beaulieu (five).

UP NEXT
Wayne State will head to the GLIAC Tournament in Midland, Mich., and the Greater Midland Tennis Center as the top seed for the weekend.  That means WSU has received a bye in the first round and will not have to play on Friday.  The team's next action will be in the semifinals on Saturday, April 27, against the winner of the Saginaw Valley State (No. 4) and Lake Superior State (No. 5) first-round match on Friday.
