Cards fall to #15 GVSU in home GLIAC action, 75-61

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The SVSU Men's Basketball team fell at home to the No. 15 Grand Valley State University Lakers on Saturday (Jan. 18), dropping the contest by a final score of 75-61.

Saginaw Valley falls to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC while the Lakers improve to 15-2 and 8-1 in league action.

The Lakers jumped out to a 14-2 lead to start and would carry an 11-point lead into the half at 41-30. GVSU had a 57.1% shooting percentage (15-28) in the opening 20 minutes of action while SVSU hit on just 7-29 shots for a percentage of 24.1%. 

Myles Belyeu and Malik Ellison each had eight points in the first half, with Belyeu adding five rebounds.

In the second half, the visitors outscored the Cardinals by a 34-31 margin and would eventually finish-off for a 75-61 win. 

Belyeu added another dozen points in the second and grabbed eight boards. Ellison scored seven points in the final frame and Delano Smith added six with seven rebounds.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Belyeu had his sixth double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 20 points and grabbing a game-best 13 rebounds. He was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
  • Ellison had 15 points while Smith had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals.
  • Fred John Jr. added seven points with three rebounds.
