Ferris State Men's Tennis Drops NCAA Regional Semifinal Match In Detroit

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad had its 2022 campaign come to an end on Monday (May 10) as the Bulldogs fell to rival Grand Valley State 4-1 in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Semifinals in Detroit.

The Bulldogs and the Lakers met for the third time this campaign and GVSU earned its second consecutive win in the series over the past week as the Lakers claimed the doubles point and three of the first four completed singles flights to garner the win.

The match was tighter than the final score as the Bulldogs held a lead or were tied in the two remaining singles contests on the court when play concluded at the Detroit Mercy Titan Tennis Courts.

The Bulldogs closed the year with a 15-5 overall record and FSU earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Regular-Season Runner-Up honors this campaign.

Overall, the Bulldogs were making their 25th all-time NCAA postseason appearance, including their seventh-straight berth in the regional field.

FSU's lone win in the contest came from Benjamin Lortie at four singles by a score of 7-5, 6-2 overall. The Bulldogs' Josh McDermott held a 5-1 lead in the third-set at five singles and Jan Koupil was tied up 2-2 in the deciding frame at three singles when the match was stopped.

Ferris State entered the regional tournament as the fifth seed with GVSU fourth overall. Top-seeded Wayne State served as host for one of the two NCAA D2 Midwest Regionals with second-seeded Indianapolis playing host to the other four-team preliminary regional event.
