Cardinals move to 2-0 with 8-2 victory at Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Cardinal baseball team faced host Anderson University (S.C.) on Saturday night in a non-conference tilt and came away with a solid 8-2 victory over the Trojans. 

After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Cards worked back to knot the score at 2-2 in the top of the 3rd when Collin Winters had a two-RBI triple that plated Brandon Scheurer and Andrew Burke.

Another run came in the top of the 4th when Hunter Merillat crossed the plate on a passed ball that gave Saginaw Valley the 3-2 edge.

SVSU scored the next five runs, going for one in the 6th on a Jordan Klapko RBI single and a trio of runs in the 7th when Merillat had an RBI double to start the scoring. He and Joshua Riggs would both score later on wild pitches and the score was 7-2 through seven innings.

The final run of the game came in the top of the 9th when Merillat hit his first career home run for the Cardinals, putting the game at its final tally of 8-2. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Merillat finished with a double and home run, scoring three runs and driving-in two with a walk.
  • Tucker Roe went 3-for-5 and Austin Koin had two hits as well for SVSU. 
  • Winters had the two runs driven-in on his triple and Klapko had the RBI single.

On the Mound

  • Jason Clark got the start, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing two runs on three hits. He walked four and struck-out five.
  • Eric Fritz (1-0) picked up the victory, pitching the final 4.2 innings in relief. He struck-out seven batters and allowed just two hits.
