Jatczak, Cornwell go back-to-back to walk-off Northwood

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – One day after watching Northwood University set a new conference record for home runs in a game, the Saginaw Valley State University baseball team responded with some long-ball dramatics of its own in the finale of a four-game series Sunday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.

Trailing 6-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth, SVSU tied the game on a two-run home run from Colin Cornwell. The next batter, Hayden Jatczak, ended the game with a solo, walk-off home run, sending the Cardinals into a frenzy and giving the home team a split in the series with a 7-6 win.

The victory pushes SVSU to 13-10 overall and 9-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

After Northwood scored one in the second and one in the third to take a 2-0 lead, SVSU tied it with two runs in the bottom of the third. Jatczak got the Cardinals on the board with a sacrifice fly RBI, while Martin Money evened the score with an RBI single.

Brandon Scheurer tied the game a second time at 3-3 with an RBI single in the sixth, but the Timberwolves built a 6-4 leading heading to the bottom of the ninth. Connor McClennen got the inning going with a lead-off single just before Cornwell's blast to tie it. After Northwood made a pitching change, Jatczak ended the game with a dramatic home run, his second of the series.

Hunter Merillat (4-0) continued his outstanding season out of the bullpen, pitching the final two innings to earn the win, his second against the Timberwolves in three days.

The Cardinals welcome Alma College for one game starting at 3:05 pm Wednesday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
