Men's Tennis Earns Impressive Victory Over No. 20-Ferris State

The Warriors earned at least a share of the regular-season GLIAC Championship.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- On a night where Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) broke the school record for the most singles wins in school history, the Wayne State University men's tennis team (18-4 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) also earned itself at least a share of the GLIAC Championship.  The Green and Gold defeated No. 20-Ferris State (15-3 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) 7-0 Saturday evening at Peachtree Tennis Club.  The Warriors have a chance to claim the title outright when they face Northwood on April 23rd.

SINGLES
Karcz was the story of the day, as his performance at No. 3 singles pushed him into first place all-time in terms of singles victories at Wayne State.  Karcz won 6-4, 6-3, which was the 72nd singles win of his career.  He passed Sebastien Foka, who played from 2002-06.

Dom Spicer (London, England) collected a victory at No. 1 singles.  He defeated his opponent, 6-0, 6-2.  Spicer received the team's game ball, which is given to the player who competed the best throughout the match.

At No. 2 singles, Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) won a three-set battle, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) kept the winning streak going with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) made quick work of his opponent at the No. 5 spot, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win.

Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) was also strong in his singles match, collecting a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles.

DOUBLES
The Warriors earned the doubles point by winning two of the three matches.  Karcz and Lakeman were terrific at No. 3 doubles, recording a 6-2 win.

Laws and Spicer played well in the No. 2 spot, earning a 6-3 victory.

In a battle of top-10 doubles teams, the No. 6-ranked pair of Drenth and Grey fell just short in the top spot.  They lost to FSU's No. 10-ranked team, 3-6.

FROM COACH MORROW
"The energy of this match and the way the boys came out was exceptional.  Probably our most solid match of the year.  They were hungry.  They wanted it.  Truly could not be prouder of this group of guys.  They are a special group and so fun to be around.  They compete at just such a nice level.  They definitely make me proud to be their coach.  They do a great job," coach Bryan Morrow said.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will look to capture the outright GLIAC Championship when they travel to Northwood on April 23rd.
