ST. PAUL, Minn. - On a cold, blustery Friday evening in Minnesota's capital city, the Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (2-1) had the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium on fire, cruising to a 20-5 victory over Quincy University (0-1) to pick up their second-straight win.
Freshman
Maddy Seifert led a potent Concordia attack with career-highs of five goals and six points, adding an assist while sophomore
Molly Moynihan matched the six points in reverse order, notching a goal and tying the school record with five assists for her second-straight six-point game, matching her career-high.
Seifert also led the team with three caused turnovers and added two ground balls while Moynihan had five draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Seniors
Erica Peterson and
Delaney Davidson also secured five points, with Davidson netting five goals while Peterson had a pair of goals and three assists which were both career-highs.
Concordia will face its second top-10 opponent of the young season on Sunday, hosting top-ranked and defending national champion Lindenwood at noon at the Concordia Dome.
The Golden Bears jumped on the Hawks early, scoring the first six goals in the first half of the first quarter of play as Seifert made an early impact with three goals and an assist in seven and a half minutes.
Quincy was never able to score consecutive goals on the night, as CSP kept pushing its lead throughout the evening including two more 4-0 scoring runs, one in the second and one in the third quarter for a 15-3 lead midway through the third.
Concordia's strength on the draw was a big factor, securing 23 of the 28 draw controls while defending against Quincy's clear attempts, holding the Hawks to 6-of-14 while converting four of their five. In the second half, Concordia had an 11-1 edge on the draw and played efficient enough that it didn't need a clearance attempt.
While four players had 5-plus points,
Taylor Preece also added a three point effort off the bench, scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another.
Hailey Hartlage also had a two-goal game and was strong in the midfield with five draw controls and two ground balls.
On the draw,
Mary Keating set a new career-high with 10, the third-most in a game in team history while adding two points on a goal and an assist while securing four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
The defense wasn't tested as the CSP attack controlled possession throughout, but the starting combination
Meghan McGowan,
Maddie Westberg,
Paige Nicklaus and added contributions from
Katie Moynihan combined for seven ground balls and pair of caused turnovers led by Nicklaus with three ground balls.
Most importantly, they kept Quincy from attacking the cage as CSP's goalies faced six total shots on the night. The Golden Bear duo of
Maddy Huebner and
Candace McDole each secured time in the crease, with Huebner picking up the win with a save and four goals allowed while McDole only allowed one goal in her time in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Concordia's attack not only controlled possession, they tallied 40 shots against Quincy including a 26-4 margin in the first half to set the tone.
Quincy was led by Patricia Chavira and Danielle Robinson who each had a pair of goals while Kelly McClure saved 10 CSP shots and had six ground balls.
