Women's Basketball Defeats Wright State Lake 88-47

Chambers and George combine for 39 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team improved to 4-1 overall with an 88-47 triumph over visiting Wright State Lake (0-8 overall) Thursday evening at the Matthaei.

HOW IT HAPPENED

WSU scored the first five points on fast-break layup by senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) and a triple by sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.), before the Lakers Ziona Williams scored after an offensive rebound.  Senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) connected from long distance before Mikayla Stump made all three free throws to cut the Warrior advantage to three (8-5) with 7:54 remaining.  After a triple by Ziona Williams made it 13-10 Wayne State, the Warriors scored six consecutive points on a basket by Johnson and back-to-back fast-break layups by Chambers.  WSU's advantage grew to 12 points (24-12) on a jumper by Chambers with 3:45 left in the opening period.  Two field goals by Teresa Craig pulled the guests within six (26-20) after 10 minutes.

Wayne State scored the first 15 points of the second quarter to open a 41-20 lead, as the Lakers went scoreless for over eight minutes.  Five different Warriors scored during the run paced by five points from Chambers and four from junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.).  WSU outscored the visitors 25-4 in the second period to lead 51-24 at intermission.

Wright State Lake won the third quarter outscoring the Warriors 16-13 to trail 64-40 heading into the final stanza.  WSU had a 24-7 edge in scoring in the fourth quarter.

TEAM STATS

Wayne State shot 49 percent (33-of-67) from the floor, including 8-of-25 (32 percent) from three-point range.  Wright State Lake shot 32 percent (20-of-63) from the field, and just 2-of-19 (11 percent) from beyond the arc.  WSU was 14-of-19 (74 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Lakers were 5-of-7 (71 percent).  The Warriors had a 45-34 advantage in rebounding.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Chambers tallied a game-high 21 points, while George chipped in with 18 points and Johnson contributed 14 points.  Sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) had a game-high 11 rebounds.  Senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) connected on three triples to become the 13th player in program history to make at least 100 three pointers in a career.

LEADING THE LAKERS

Teresa Craig totaled a team-high 16 points off the bench, while Williams had 15 points.  Mallory Barnes grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.
