A 5-2 Victory Completes Perfect Weekend For Women's Tennis

The Warriors win their ninth straight dual match on Sunday by defeating Drury.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (9-0 overall) continues to post victories this spring season, as they defeated #27-Drury University (5-3 overall) by a 5-2 score on Sunday afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex. The Warriors won all three of their matches played in Springfield, Mo. this weekend.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold won two of the three doubles matches over the Panthers.

The duo of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) finished first with their 6-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) improved to 6-1 as a doubles tandem with their 6-3 victory over Ewa Samberger and Kseniia Eremina from the No. 1 doubles spot, giving the Warriors the 1-0 match advantage.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) fell 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.

SINGLES
Wayne State picked up wins at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 spots in singles play, more than enough for them to clinch the victory.

Ruyssen handled her opponent with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in straight sets at the No. 1 spot. Through nine singles matches this season, she has yet to lose a match, possessing a sparkling 9-0 ledger.

Over at the No. 3 spot, Arafat won the first set with ease (6-0), but dropped the second set, 2-6. The freshman recovered and pulled out a 6-2 triumph in the final set.

Szpakowska put in a dominating performance at the No. 5 spot, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Leana Chanove. The freshman's victory was the clincher for WSU this afternoon.

Weekes gutted out a close win in her first set, needing seven points to do so, but grabbed the point with her 6-2 win in the second set at No. 6.

Komar fell to Clara Kuehnle 4-6, 2-6 at No. 2, while Gorgidze and Alma Abazi were locked in an intense tiebreaker at the No. 4 spot. After falling 1-6 in the first set, the Warrior stayed alive by forcing a second set tiebreaker, but fell 13-11 in it and dropped the decision.

FROM THE PLAYERS
"It was a long weekend for us with back-to-back matches and little time to recover between them. We learned so much from our previous matches, applied that to what we've worked on, and played smarter. We maintained our intensity and rigor throughout these three days by taking them one day at a time. I am really proud of our team effort and of our freshmen who played with grit and composure," said Anais Ruyssen.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will next play on Friday, February 3 when they face Division I member Bowling Green in Perrysburg, Ohio. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
