Bears top Northern Michigan for program's first conference win

Concordia holds off late comeback by Wildcats

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (4-1, 1-0 GLIAC) topped Northern Michigan 18-15 on Saturday afternoon at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium to secure the program's first-ever conference victory. The win also propels the program to its longest winning streak of four games.

Concordia continues a three game GLIAC opening homestand next Friday at 7 p.m. against Tiffin before welcoming #20 Grand Valley State on Sunday at noon. The Golden Bears are now 3-0 against Northern Michigan including a pair of wins at the Concordia Dome.

Sophomore Maddie Hentges and freshman Raelyn Korinek each scored four goals with Hentges also adding a pair of assists and Korinek one. Junior Sheala Osborne also had a five point game with three goals and two assists.

Sophomore Katie Lottsfeldt earned the win in goal, registering four first half saves with two goals allowed before giving way to freshman Claire Hagen who made three second half saves while holding off the comeback. Lottsfeldt also had six ground balls in her 30 minutes in the cage.

Emily Dvorak and Graison Ringlever each had five goals and assist to lead Northern Michigan.

Concordia asserted itself right off the draw, scoring 44 seconds into play on a sophomore Kailey Heinl free position shot. The Bears scored a goal in each of the first three minutes for an early 3-0 lead. Heinl had a pair of goals in the contest.

The Golden Bears were efficient on free position shots in the first half, scoring four of their first seven goals via the free position which helped them mount an 11-2 lead by halftime.

The Bears built the nine goal halftime lead by attempting 20 more shots than NMU (26-6) including an 11-3 advantage on the draw.

Northern Michigan scored the first three goals of the second half in the opening five minutes to cut the margin to six, 11-5 before Concordia used a 4-0 run sparked by a pair of Korinek goals.

It was the first of three 10-goal leads for CSP, holding 15-5, 16-6 and 17-7 leads with the last 10-goal margin coming off a goal by freshman Erica Peterson in the 14th minute. Peterson had three points, scoring a goal and dishing a pair of first half assists.

NMU trimmed into the double-digit margin by scoring six in a row but still faced a four goal deficit with just over two and a half minutes to play.

Osborne sealed it with a goal in the 30th minute extending the lead to five with just 55 seconds remaining. The Wildcats added a pair of goals in the last 36 seconds to cut the margin to three for the first time since the middle of the first half.

While things evened out statistically in the second half, CSP still had a 43-25 final shots margin, 27-20 edge in ground balls, 20-14 in draw controls and committed five fewer turnovers (17-22).

Freshman Lex Seifert led the Bears on the draw with eight draw controls.
