Baseball Pushes Winning Streak to Eight

The 19th-ranked Warriors beat GVSU twice on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The 19th-ranked Wayne State University baseball team (17-3 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) hosted Grand Valley State (7-10 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) to open the GLIAC season on Saturday. The Warriors took game one 3-0 behind a complete game shutout from Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) (3-0) before winning game two 7-2.

GAME ONE (W, 3-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors led 1-0 after a Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.  Another DeLanoy RBI single in the bottom of the third inning pushed the home lead to 2-0.  

Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) sent a moon shot over the wall in left field in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving the Green & Gold a 3-0 lead.

Brown stranded two Lakers in the sixth and set down three of the four batters he faced in the seventh to seal the victory.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while MacLean scored three runs.

ON THE MOUND
Brown notched his first career complete game shutout, while striking out eight batters and allowing four hits.

GAME TWO (W, 7-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

A bases-loaded walk to Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) gave WSU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) sent an RBI double down the right field line to stretch WSU's advantage to 2-0.

Two more hits and a GVSU error in the bottom of the fourth inning gave Wayne State a 4-0 lead.  Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich.) scored from second on a throwing error, while Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) plated a run with a single through the right side.

Another Lakers' error in the fifth inning gave the Warriors a 5-0 lead.  MacLean doubled home a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, extending the lead to 6-0.  A solo home run accounted for GVSU's first run of the day in the seventh inning.  Another double from Finkbeiner in the eighth inning produced a run.  GVSU added a run in the ninth inning to make the final score 7-2.

AT THE PLATE
Finkbeiner finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, two doubles and two runs scored.  Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) was 2-for-4.

ON THE MOUND
Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) (1-0) was solid through seven innings, allowing one run on three hits to go with four punch outs.  Brandon Williams (Sterling Heights. Mich. / Stevenson) allowed an unearned run and struck out two in two innings of relief.

UP NEXT
The teams will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
