Lakers Drop Home Match to Northwood in Afternoon Conference Contest

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match to the Northwood Timberwolves on Saturday, Oct. 2 by a final score of 3-0. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 1-4 in conference play this season after losing the match by scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-23. 

The Lakers trailed early in the first set to the Timberwolves (6-2) but would pull within three points of Northwood when Halle Grulke recorded a kill to make it a 9-6 game. As the opening set went on, the Timberwolves continued to pull ahead of the Lakers on the scoreboard and would eventually lead 22-10 late in the set. Northwood closed out the first set (25-11) to take the first set win.

In the second set, the Lakers trailed 5-0 but would answer with a run of five straight points to tie the score (5-5). The Timberwolves held onto the lead through the middle stages of the set but the Lakers kept the score within two points for most of play. With the set at 13-11, the Timberwolves strung together four straight points to build a 17-11 lead. Northwood would take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 second set win. 

The Lakers came out strong in the third set, as the home squad looked to force a fourth set, and took a 4-2 lead. LSSU held the advantage, building a four-points lead (11-7) when Katja Wilhelms recorded an ace for the Lakers. The two conference opponents continued the even play as the score was tied at 16 and then again at 19. Northwood notched three straight points to take a 22-19 lead and the Lakers were unable to come back, falling in the third set by a score of 25-23.

Next weekend, the Lakers will continue their home and GLIAC stints with a matchup of Wisconsin Parkside on Friday, October 9th at 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday, October 10th, the Lakers will face Purdue Northwest at 2:00 p.m. Both matches will take place in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
