Women's Basketball Hangs Tough But Falls To No. 2 Grand Valley State

Sam Cherney, Alexis Miller and Grace George each score in double figures for the Warriors.

DETROIT -- Though the Wayne State University women's basketball team (16-8 overall, 12-7 GLIAC) led by three midway through the third quarter, Grand Valley State (24-1 overall, 17-1 GLIAC) made a late push to secure a 63-54 victory.

FIRST QUARTER
The Warriors started fast, posting the first seven points of the contest.  Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.), buried a triple, while Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) and Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) each had lay-ups.  The Lakers finally got on the board at the 6:46 mark, but a Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) jumper pushed the Warriors in front 9-2 just moments later.  However, GVSU would score 11 straight points to finish the quarter, taking a 13-9 lead into the second stanza.

SECOND QUARTER
Much like the first period, the Green and Gold came out firing, scoring the first seven points of the frame to take a 16-13 lead.  Miller had a three-point play, while Cherney and Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) each had two points.  After a Laker basket, Miller would sink another triple, giving WSU a 19-15 advantage with just over seven minutes to play in the opening half.  GVSU eventually took the lead 22-21 with 52 seconds to play in the second stanza, but a Cherney jumper late in the period gave the Warriors a 23-22 lead heading into the break.

THIRD QUARTER
The Green and Gold quickly added on to its lead with a George three pointer and another lay-up by Cherney.  The Warriors led 28-22 at the 8:16 mark of the period.  GVSU would score the next six points to knot the game at 28-28.  Miller would put WSU back up three with a triple at 6:10 of the frame.  After a three pointer by GVSU tied the game again, Sherwood completed a three-point play to put the Warriors back in front 34-31 with 4:37 to play in the stanza.  From there, the Lakers took control of the contest, embarking on a 10-1 run to end the period.  GVSU led 41-35 after three quarters.

FOURTH QUARTER
Cherney did what she could to keep the Warriors afloat to open the final period, scoring the first six Warriors points.  They trailed 46-41 with just under seven minutes to play.  The Lakers had another run in them, scoring nine straight points, extending their lead to 55-41 with 3:26 left in the contest.  George scored five straight points to get the Warriors back within nine (55-46), but it was too little too late, as the two teams played even down the stretch.  The Lakers collected a 63-54 victory.

TEAM STATS
Shooting wise, the Warriors held the advantage from the field, hitting 32 percent (18-of-56) of their looks, while GVSU shot 31 percent (17-of-55).  However, it was a different story from beyond the arc, as the Lakers shot 44 percent (7-of-16) compared to WSU's 28 percent (5-of-18).  On the glass, GVSU held a slight edge, 42-40.
