Baseball Blanks Tiffin for 9-0 Win

The Warriors and Dragons will meet twice on Sunday.

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. -- Behind a strong pitching performance from Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (1-0) and steady production at the plate, the Wayne State University baseball program (2-0) took game two of the season-opening series with a 9-0 win over Tiffin (2-4) on Saturday evening.  The teams are playing a four-game series at Drakes Creek Park outside of Nashville.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) singled and stole second base to begin the bottom of the first inning.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) drove in the game's first run with a single into center field.  After a double from Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), a sacrifice fly from Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) extended WSU's lead to 2-0.

CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) singled to start the bottom of the fifth inning and Tanderys  drove in a run with a single into right field.  A walk to Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) laded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning and a two-run single from Foley made it 5-0 in favor of the Warriors.

The Warriors added four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the final score at 9-0.  In the frame Maury drove in a run with a single, Foley plated a pair with a double and Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) collected his first RBI of the season with sacrifice fly.

AT THE PLATE
Foley led the offensive attack going 3-for-4 with four RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.  Finkbeiner, Tanderys, Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.) and Maury all had two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Fitzpatrick struck out a career-best nine batters over seven shutout innings and only allowed four hits.  Jimmy Love (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) tossed the final two frames, striking out five batters and not allowing a hit.

UP NEXT
The series concludes with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
