Men's Tennis Drops GLIAC Opener at #22-Ferris State

The Warriors won three of the six singles matches against the Bulldogs.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (10-9 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) fell 4-3 to No. 22-ranked Ferris State University (9-3 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) in the conference opener on Friday afternoon at the FSU Racquet & Fitness Center.

DOUBLES
The Bulldogs claimed the opening point of the match by winning two of the three contests in doubles action.

The Wayne State victory came at the No. 1 spot, as Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) picked up a 6-3 victory over the No. 31-ranked doubles pairing of Jan Koupil and Benjamin Lortie.  Drenth and Grey are third nationally in doubles.

Falling 6-2 at the No. 2 spot were Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England), while Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and his partner Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) dropped a 6-1 decision at the third flight.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold picked up wins at each of the top three singles spots, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.

Drenth, the 34th-ranked player in Division II, defeated Erik Kovacs 6-2, 7-5 at the top flight.  Winning with back to back 6-4 scores was Grey at the No. 2 spot, securing a spotless afternoon for both Warrior players.

Also triumphant in his match was Karcz at the third spot.  He rallied back after dropping the first set (4-6) to handle Yannic Mader 6-2, 6-1 in the second and third sets.

Playing at the No. 4 singles spot for the first time this spring, Spicer lost a straight-set decision to Lortie, 6-3, 6-4.  The redshirt junior is the 40th-ranked singles player in the nation.

Laws put forth a challenge against Alessandro Santangelo at the No. 5 spot, winning a tiebreaker in the second set to knot the match and send the battle to a third set.  The redshirt junior would fall 6-1 in the final set.

After not playing in singles for the past three contests, Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) returned to action at Ferris State.  He lost at the No. 6 spot to Esunge Ndumbe, 6-2, 6-3.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude a back-to-back trip when they visit Grand Valley State on Saturday at 5 p.m.  It will be another all-ranked contest, as the Lakers are placed 39th in the ITA Rankings as of March 22nd.
