Men's Basketball Hangs On to Win Over Purdue Northwest

The Warriors led 34-20 at halftime.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (4-14, 3-12 GLIAC) bested Purdue Northwest (5-18, 2-13 GLIAC) 56-53 on Thursday night inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  WSU led 34-20 at halftime but a 13-0 run by PNW made it tight down the stretch.  A three-point play from Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) and a defensive stop on the game's final possession delivered the Warriors a three-point victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU led 5-4 early after a jumper from Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) at the 17:13 mark.  Four straight points by Tyree Martin (Chicago, Ill. / Curie) pushed the home lead to 15-6 with 12:35 to play before halftime.  A three-pointer from Owens-White made it 22-10 at the 9:15 mark.  David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) was strong on the glass all night and a put back by him with just over five minutes to play gave the Green & Gold a 30-13 lead.  Owens-White beat the first-half buzzer to put the halftime tally at 34-20.

The Pride began to chip away in the second half and trimmed its deficit to eight, 35-27, following a triple by Mikell Cooper.  Two points from Williams returned the home advantage to 16, 43-27, at the 13:04 mark.  Mike Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) collected a pair of second-chance points and his layup made it 49-37 with 9:11 left.  The Pride used a WSU scoring drought that lasted from the 7:05 mark until the 1:18 mark to get back into the games.  A 13-0 run allowed the visitors  to tak a 52-51 lead with two minutes remaining.  Owens-White drove the lane and converted a layup while being fouled.  After his free throw, WSU led 56-53 and Anthony Irvin's game-tying attempt was wide left.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Nine Warriors scored and Owens-White led the way with 10 points.  Hughes just missed his first career double-double with nine points a season-best 16 rebounds.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Anthony Barnard scored a game-high 17 points, while also pulling down nine boards.  Cooper chipped in 12 points.

ONE BIG THING
Neither team shot the ball well from deep but WSU was solid at the free throw line, making 86 percent (12-of-14) of its attempts compared to PNW's 9-for-14 mark at the charity stripe.

UP NEXT
WSU will host Parkside on Saturday afternoon with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
