Men's Tennis Advances to GLIAC Championship After 4-0 Win Over Grand Valley State

The Warriors have won their last nine matches, with seven in shutout fashion.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (19-9 overall) punched its ticket to Sunday's GLIAC Championship match after a 4-0 shutout of No. 50-ranked Grand Valley State in a semifinal affair at the Greater Midland Tennis Center on Saturday.

The Warriors entered the contest as the two seed, playing the three seed in GVSU.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold did not play on Friday due to their earned bye from the regular season, while the Lakers were playing their second match in as many days.  The Warriors used the extra rest to their advantage, beginning with claiming the opening doubles point.

The third-ranked, and top flight, pairing of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) kicked off their postseason run with a 6-3 win over the Grand Valley State team of Sean Miller and Unai Gonzalez, the same tandem they handled in the regular season.

Dom Spicer (London, England) and Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) continued to play together in doubles, and continued to pick up victories.  They earned a 6-4 triumph against Sebastian Arce and Freddy Cossio at the No. 3 spot.  The two have won all four finished matches that they have competed in with each other this spring.

The No. 2 doubles team of Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) were unable to finish their match vs. Jack Dausman and Martin Matov.

SINGLES
Wayne State claimed the first three points in singles action, ending the clinch-style match and securing their spot in the finals.

Karcz blanked Miller in both sets at the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-0, to nab his 11th consecutive singles victory.

Spicer, the No. 67-ranked singles player in the country, drew Dausman for his contest at the fourth position.  The WSU redshirt junior posted a 6-0 shutout of his GVSU opponent in the opening set, before tallying a 6-2 win in the second set to claim the win.

Grey clinched the match for Wayne State with his 6-4, 6-2 win vs. Arce at the second spot, ending the match and officially keeping his squad in contention for another conference championship.

Playing but not finishing their matches were Drenth (No. 1 spot), Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) (No. 5 spot) and Laws (No. 6 spot).  Kitayama was one point away from becoming the clinching win himself in his match with Ignacio Morera-Lucas, but Grey nipped him to the finish line.

FROM COACH MORROW
"We had a nice win today!  Great atmosphere and tennis match.  Both teams showed plenty of heart and fight in this one.  Probably the most complete match we've played this year; all the guys really were looking solid.  Grand Valley fought us hard, but we completed the job and did what we needed to do," said head coach Bryan Morrow.

UP NEXT
Wayne State and No. 19-ranked, top-seeded Ferris State will battle for the GLIAC Tournament championship on Sunday at 10 a.m. inside the Greater Midland Tennis Center.  The Warriors are looking for back-to-back league titles and three league championships in the past four seasons (WSU won in 2022 and 2019; the 2020 event was not held due to COVID-19).
