Karter Fitzpatrick went the distance in game one on Friday, allowing just four hits and no earned runs.

Fitzpatrick's Gem Powers Baseball to Friday Split

The Warriors won game one 4-1 before falling in the nightcap 8-6.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (23-9, 10-3 GLIAC) split a Friday doubleheader with Grand Valley State (22-11, 5-4 GLIAC), winning game one 4-1 before dropping game two, 8-6.

GAME ONE (W, 4-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) put WSU on top 1-0 with a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the second inning.

An RBI single from Christian Faust in the top of third inning evened the game at 1-1.  However, a fielder's choice RBI from Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) gave the Green & Gold a 2-1 advantage.  

Ramirez doubled to center with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning before Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) was hit by a 1-1 breaking ball.  CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) sent a triple to the wall in right center giving the Warriors a 4-1 lead.

GVSU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning but Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (5-0) got a fly out and a strikeout to end the game and secure the win.

AT THE PLATE
Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and Ramirez both had two hits, while Maury drove in a team-best two runs.

ON THE MOUND
Fitzpatrick pitched his second career complete game, working seven innings and allowing an unearned run with two strikeouts.  He gave up four hits and walked two.

GAME TWO (L, 6-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Faust put GVSU up 3-0 early with a three-run home run to right field in the top of the first inning.  Wayne State responded with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) doubled home the first run, while Maury drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-2.  

Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) sent a single through the left side ti tie the game at 3-3.  Ramirez sprinted home on a wild pitch to give WSU a 4-3 lead and an RBI single from Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) made it 5-3.


Both teams were quiet until the Lakers scored three runs on four hits and an error tot akr a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Ramirez connected for his second long ball of the day to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Green & Gold had two singles in the bottom of the eighth inning but were unable to push across the go-ahead run.

GVSU used two hits and an untimely error to score twice in the top of the ninth inning.  The Lakers' closer Nick Shaw locked down the ninth in order to give GVSU a two-run triumph.

AT THE PLATE
Foley and Miller went 2-for-4 to lead the WSU lineup.

ON THE MOUND
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich.) allowed six runs (five earned) in six and 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) (1-1) allowed two unearned runs in an inning and 2/3 before Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) collected the final two outs of the ninth inning.


UP NEXT
The two sides will finish the four-game set on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
