Cardinals close-out regular season with 7-6 win at #22 Wayne State

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The SVSU Baseball team closed-out the 2019 regular season with a 7-6 victory on the road at Wayne State on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals used 10 hits and a four-run inning to lead them to the win.

Single runs for SVSU in the top of the 2nd and 3rd innings gave the visitors a 2-0 edge. Anthony Kania had an RBI groundout while Adam Turner had an RBI double.

Four runs in the top of the 4th inning pushed the Cardinal lead to 6-0. Collin Winters came across on a wild pitch, Kania had an RBI single and Jordan Swiss had two RBI on a single. With Swiss's single, he became the program's all-time leader in base hits with 230. 

The Warriors made a push to get back in the game, scoring four runs in the fourth through sixth innings to trim the deficit to 6-4. 

The Cardinals, however, got a crucial run in the 7th when Winters had an RBI on a sacrifice fly. That pushed the lead to 7-4. 

Wayne State added two runs in th ehome half of the 7th and that would be all of the scoring for the game as the Cards claimed the 7-6 victory.

Eric Fritz picked up the win in relief, working 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck-out five batters and walked five. Jacob Crossan got the save, tossing 2.2 innings to finish the game. He allowed zero runs on three hits with a trio of strikeouts and a walk. 

Derrek Clyde and Austin Koin each had two hits in the win, with Koin's both being doubles. Kania had a hit and two RBI, as did Swiss. Turner and Winters each had a hit and an RBI while Andrew Burke and Craig Wilson added a hit-apiece.

SVSU enters the 2019 GLIAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will face top-seeded Ashland on Thursday (May 9) at 2:30 p.m. The tournament is being held at Wuerfel Pak in Traverse City, Michigan.
