Wild weekend ends with SVSU earning series sweep over PNW

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team concluded their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opening series with Purdue Northwest on Sunday afternoon. The series was affected by weather all weekend, as two games were suspended and completed later in the weekend. 

SVSU earned the four-game sweep over the hosts, moving their record to 12-8 overall and 4-0 in GLIAC play. 

Game Breakdown (Friday-Saturday):

  • Game two of the series began on Friday after the Cardinals won the first game of the series 6-5 in seven innings. 
  • SVSU scored five runs in the top of the third inning, beginning with Todd Paperd's bases-loaded walk to make it 1-0 and score Connor McClennen. A Tucker Roe sacrifice fly made it 2-0 before back-to-back RBI singles by Jeffrey Reseigh and Andrew Burke made it 4-0. 
  • The Cardinals added one more run in the top of the third on an error by PNW, allowing Reseigh to score and make the score 5-0. 
  • The Pride responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, before the game was suspended due to weather heading into the top of the fourth with SVSU holding a 5-3 lead. 
  • On Saturday, the game resumed in the top of the fourth and the Cardinals added three runs and extended their lead. Roe hit an RBI triple down the right-field line that scored Paperd and Martin Money. Roe later came across the plate thanks to a sacrifice fly by Austin Schweiger
  • A passed ball in the bottom of the fourth inning allowed PNW to get a run back and make the score 8-4. 
  • SVSU responded with three runs in the top of the fifth. Paperd brought home Hayden Jatczak with an RBI single, an error by the Pride allowed Martin Money to score, and Schweiger brought Paperd across the plate with an RBI single. 
  • The Cardinals weren't done, as they added two more runs in the top of the sixth thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by Hayden Jatczak and Martin Money, making the score 13-4 SVSU.
  • Purdue Northwest didn't go away, however, as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh, and one in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to just one run heading into the ninth inning. 
  • SVSU added four runs in the top of the ninth, as Reed Raymond brought home Tucker Roe with an RBI before McClennen and Jatczak hit RBI triples to extend the lead to 17-12. 
  • In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals held off the Pride and earned the victory. 
  • On the mound JJ Arbini got the start before being relieved by Steven Hecht who earned the win, pitching 3.2 innings of relief and recording six strikeouts. Raymond earned his third save of the season and second of the weekend after pitching the final two innings for SVSU. 

Game Breakdown (Saturday-Sunday):

  • The game scheduled for Saturday began before it was suspended in the bottom of the seventh due to darkness. 
  • SVSU got on the board first with a run in the top of the second. Ethan Dufresne brought home Tucker Roe with a sacrifice fly.
  • A Hayden Jatczak sacrifice fly allowed Connor McClennen to score and make it 2-0 in the top of the third. 
  • The Pride responded with a run in the bottom half of the third, before the Cardinals scored four runs each in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. 
  • Schweiger got the scoring started in the top of the fourth with an RBI single before Tucker Roe scored on a wild pitch. McClennen capped off the fourth inning for SVSU with a two-run double that scored Schweiger and Reed Raymond
  • PNW allowed Tucker Roe to score on another wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning. Andrew Burke extended the SVSU lead with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-1. 
  • An RBI double by McClennen made it 9-1 and scored Dufresne before McClennen came across to score thanks to a Hayden Jatczak RBI triple and make it 10-1 after the top of the fifth.
  • In the top of the seventh, Martin Money brought home Raymond with a sacrifice fly, and Todd Paperd hit a two-run double and grew the lead to 13-1.
  • The game was suspended after the top of the seventh inning with SVSU leading 13-1, it resumed on Sunday in the bottom of the seventh, and Purdue Northwest got right back in the game with nine runs and making the score 13-10 Cardinals. 
  • SVSU was able to hang on and earn the victory, as Hunter Merillat (2-1) pitched a scoreless final 2.2 innings of relief and earned his second victory of the season, recording four strikeouts. Getting the start on the mound for SVSU was Christopher Schmees, who pitched 4.2 innings, allowing one run, three hits, and striking out five. 

Game Breakdown (Sunday):

  • The final game of the series saw SVSU's offense continue to score runs, as they rolled to an 11-1 victory. 
  • An error by the host Pride allowed the Cardinals to get the scoring started right away in the top of the first, as Connor McClennen crossed home due to the error.
  • Todd Paperd hit a sacrifice fly that scored Hayden Jatczak, before Tucker Roe capped the first inning off with an RBI triple and made the score 3-0. 
  • PNW scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first, but it was all SVSU from there on out. 
  • Martin Money drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the second to make the score 4-1. 
  • In the top of the third inning, Roe scored after a wild pitch, before a three-run double by Jatczak cleared the bases and made it 8-1. 
  • SVSU added one run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI groundout by Paperd, and two more runs in the top of the seventh after a two-run single by Money scored McClennen and Jatczak.
  • On the mound, Hayden Jatczak got the start and went 3.0 innings, allowing one run, three hits, and striking out two batters. He was relieved by Tyler McLaren (3-0) who earned the win after pitching the final 6.0 innings, not allowing a run while only giving up four hits and recording two strikeouts.
