Women's Basketball Falls to Michigan Tech

Sam Cherney was strong for the Warriors, posting a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

DETROIT --  For the first time this season, the Wayne State University women's basketball team (7-4 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) dropped a game at home, falling 66-60 to Michigan Tech (10-4 overall, 5-1 GLIAC), Thursday night inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

FIRST QUARTER
The Warriors started things off with four straight points, thanks to baskets by Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.).  The Huskies responded to the early run, and eventually took a 10-8 lead on an Alex Rondorf three-pointer at the 3:14 mark of the first quarter.  However, the Warriors would go on to score the next nine points to close out the frame, taking a 17-10 advantage into the second stanza.  Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) had two buckets in the run.

SECOND QUARTER
Just as they started the first quarter, the Warriors quickly put four more points on the board, with baskets by Cherney and Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) to extend their advantage to 21-10 early in the second period.  Michigan Tech had an answer, however, as the Huskies stormed back to tie the game at 24-24 with 5:15 to play in the first half.  The two teams traded buckets over the next few minutes to make the score 28-28.  MTU hit a shot with 1:07 left in the frame, and Miller split a pair of free throws to bring the Warriors within one (30-29) at the half.

THIRD QUARTER
WSU quickly stormed back to open the second half, jumping in front 37-30 with 8:18 to play in the third period.  Sherwood had five points and Miller added three in the 8-0 run.  The two clubs went back-and-forth before the Warriors pushed their lead to eight (42-34) on a Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) jumper at the 6:12 mark of the third frame.  A 9-2 Huskies run erased that lead for the Warriors and brought the score to 44-43 with 1:41 to play in the third quarter.  Sherwood split a pair of free throws, while Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and Daisy Ansel traded three-point baskets to close the period.  The Green and Gold led 48-46 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Huskies took a two-point lead (52-50) on a pair of free throws at the 7:20 mark of the period.  That lead was short lived, as Sherwood buried a triple to give the Warriors the lead right back on the ensuing possession.  Michigan Tech put together an 8-2 run to take a 60-55 lead with 4:41 to play.  From there, the Warriors could only get as close as four, eventually going on to lose 66-60.

TEAM STATS
The Warriors held the rebounding advantage 41-34, but the Huskies led just about every other category.  MTU shot 41.5 percent from the field (22-of-53) compared to WSU's 35 percent (22-of-63).  From deep, Michigan Tech hit 33 percent (7-of-21) of its looks, while the Warriors shot just 23 percent (5-of-22).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sherwood led the team in scoring, collecting 15 points, while adding three assists.  Cherney posted another double-double, tallying 10 points and 15 rebounds.  Miller also reached double figures, pouring in 13 points, while adding five rebounds.
