KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (3-9 overall, 3-5 GLIAC) met Parkside (7-7 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) for the first time since 2011 on Saturday afternoon. and the Warriors dropped the first-ever GLIAC meeting between the teams in overtime, 71-67.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors led 8-3 at the 17:55 mark following a triple from Brandon Hau but WSU tied the game at 10-10 on a jumper from
Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) with 14:47 to play in the opening period. Â
Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) kept the visitors close, 16-14, with a bucket at the 11:14 mark. Â The Warriors tied the game at 18-18 with a
Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) layup with 9:02 to play before halftime. Â Murray capped the 6-0 run with another basket, giving WSU its first lead of the evening at the 8:26 mark. Â Â Davis, Jr. connected from behind the arc, extending the Green & Gold advantage to 25-22. Â A layup by Henderson kept the margin at three, 31-28, at the 3:19 mark. Â A driving layup from
Timothy Huguley (Detroit, Mich. / Old Redford Academy) with 45 second left to play gave WSU a three-point lead. Â Parkside answered with two points of its own to make the halftime score 35-34 in favor the Warriors.
Wayne State held a slim lead until a basket from Chavares Flanigan at the 16:08 mark of the second half.  Owens-White scored eight consecutive points to stake the Warriors to a 45-43 advantage with 11:35 to play.  Huguley knocked down a mid-range jumper to keep the margin at two at the 8:58 mark.  The Rangers led by four with 3:39 remaining but Owens-White cut the deficit to two, 58-56, with a jump shot. Ramar Evans made one of two free throw attempts to give UWP a 59-56 lead at the 2:18 mark.  Owens-White drilled a trey to tie the game at 59-59 with 59 second left to play.  Both teams missed jumpers to potentially win the game and 40 minutes proved to not be enough as the teams readied for five additional minutes.
Henderson gave WSU a 65-62 lead in the extra session with a three-point play at the 2:03 mark. Â Five points from Brandon Trimble pushed the home team in front, 67-65, with 24 seconds remaining and he added four more down the stretch from the charity stripe to help Parkside to secure the victory, 71-67.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Owens-White finished with 20 points, while Henderson (15), Murray (13) and Davis (11) also scored in double figures. Â Henderson posted his second straight double-double with 13 rebounds.
LEADING THE RANGERS
Flanigan notched 20 points, while Trimble tallied 19.
TEAM STATS
The Warriors shot 43 percent (25-of-59), while Parkside also finished with a 43 percent (24-of-56) field goal percentage. Â WSU out-rebounded UWP 39-32 and tallied 17 second-chance points, while cleaning up the glass.
