Volleyball Stumbles at Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (10-3 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) fell at Michigan Tech (10-4 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) in four sets on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Huskies started fast and led the opening set 13-3.  The Warriors were never able to find their footing and dropped the first set 25-12.

The second set was far more competitive and the Green & Gold led 8-3 following an ace by Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower).  However, MTU would come back to tie the set at 12-12 and then take a 14-12 advantage after a 6-1 run.  Back-to-back kills by Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) trimmed the WSU deficit to one, 16-15.  Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) kept Wayne State close, 19-17, with a kill.  The Warriors used a kill from Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) to make it 21-18.  Three kills by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) brought WSU within one, 23-22.  A block from Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and Shell gave the Warriors a 24-22 advantage.  A MTU service error won the set for Wayne State and evened the match at 1-1.

Both teams traded punches during the third set.  MTU led until two straight kills from Wagner tied the set at 9-9.  Another point from Wagner gave the Warriors a 13-12 advantage but the Huskies responded by winning four consecutive points to regain a 16-13 lead.  A block from Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) and Withun put the Green & Gold on top 24-22.  However, the home side won the final four points to win 26-24 and take a 2-1 match lead.

Wagner put WSU on top 6-2 with a kill early in the fourth set.  After a kill from Kray to make it 7-2, the Huskies rattled off five straight points to tie the set at 7-7.  Wayne State used two kills from Morrison to go ahead 11-9.  The margin grew to 17-14 on a kill from Kray.  A point by Morrison and three home service errors made it 22-19.  Michigan Tech would storm back to tie the set at 23-23 and win 25-23 to take the match 3-1.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Kray and Wagner both had 12 kills to lead the WSU offense.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) dished out 38 assists.  Wagner posted a double-double with 14 digs, while Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) had a team-high 16 digs.  Malewicz finished with 10 digs.
