Northwood Slips Past Wayne State 5-4

DETROIT – The Wayne State men's tennis team (13-6, 5-2 GLIAC) closed out its regular season schedule on Tuesday with a close 5-4 loss against Northwood (9-4, 6-0 GLIAC) at the Peachtree Tennis Club. The Warriors were able to sweep all three doubles matches before Northwood rallied in singles play.

Both teams came into the match ranked nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Northwood is currently slotted 15th in the nation and first in the Midwest Region while WSU is 39th in the nation and fifth in the Midwest Region.

The Warriors success in doubles matches included a pair of 8-4 wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 teams. Eric Szydlowski and Thomas Ducret defeated Michael Haas and Marcus Oliveira from the second flight and Oscar Gamarra and Kevin Turnbull beat Julian Freese and Max Dutois at third doubles. The win gave Gamarra and Turnbull a record of 11-6.

Bertrand Moulin and Britton Steele continued to win at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 triumph of Peter Kazianschuetz and Frederic Schoelzel. Moulin and Steele finished the season with a 13-3 record.

Ducret, who has now won five matches in a row, defeated Biarneix 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 at No. 3 singles for the Warriors' only singles point of the day. Ducret ends his first regular season at Wayne State with a 14-5 record.

Moulin was unable to capture his 20th victory of the season in singles play as Kazianschuetz was a 6-3, 6-2 winner in the first flight.

Steele and Gamarra were also unable to gain victories from the second and fourth slots as both suffered 6-4, 6-2 loses to Schoelzel and Freese.

Roberto Gomez was downed 6-3, 6-3 in the fifth flight for WSU while Eric Szydlowski  was also unable to pull off the victory from the sixth spot, losing 6-1, 6-2 to Haas.

Wayne State will now set its attention to this weekend's GLIAC Championships.
