Women's Tennis Begins Conference Action With Victory at Ferris State

The Warriors earned five points in singles action for the 5-2 win.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (13-2 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) defeated the 50th-ranked Ferris State University Bulldogs (6-7 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) 5-2 to begin conference play on Friday at the FSU Racquet & Fitness Center.

DOUBLES
FSU started the afternoon with a 1-0 edge after doubles action.

The Warriors saw a switch in their pairings at the top two doubles spots.  At her familiar No. 1 spot was Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) playing with Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt), while Ruyssen's usual partner, Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) was playing with Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) at the No. 2 spot.

The Ruyssen and Arafat duo fell 6-2 to Ana Hernandez and Morgan Waller, and the Komar/Gorgidze pairing dropped a 6-3 decision.

Though the point was already claimed, Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) claimed their sixth doubles win together after downing Sophie Daavettila and Amelia Laverdiere, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.

SINGLES
WSU excelled in singles play, claiming five of the six matches and storming back for a critical conference victory over a ranked foe.

Komar was first to finish, winning 6-4 over Waller in the first set and shutting her out (6-0) in the second set at the second flight.

The Green and Gold moved ahead for good with Gorgidze's triumph over Ana Hernandez at the No. 4 spot.  She won, 7-5, 6-2.

Ferris State had a pair of players retire early, giving Wayne State two more points.  Parker Nolan was forced to retire in the third set of her match against Arafat at the No. 3 singles spot, while Maria Hernandez retired in the second set at the fifth flight in her battle with Szpakowska.  This was the point that clinched the victory for the Warriors.

Szpakowska was ahead 3-0 in the second set after claiming a 6-3 win in the first set.

Also winning on Friday was Weekes at the No. 6 spot, as she was able to drop Kennedy Dumas, 6-4, 6-3, in straight sets.

At the No. 1 spot, Ruyssen fell to Daavettila despite claiming a 6-2 win in the opening set.  The junior entered the match as the No. 16-ranked singles player in Division II, according to the ITA.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will next play at Grand Valley State on Saturday at 5 p.m.  The Lakers are the No. 32-ranked program in the country as of the March 22nd ITA Rankings.
