Men's Basketball Drops Overtime Thriller, 76-73, at Parkside

Neely scores a game-high 26 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (4-8 overall, 1-7 GLIAC) lost in overtime, 76-73, at Parkside (9-7 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) for the second straight season on Thursday night extending its losing streak to five games.  The game featured eight ties and six lead changes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors led 11-6 at the 15:55 mark of the opening half after a three-pointer from senior guard Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International).  Another bucket from Neely gave WSU a 15-12 advantage with 12:51 left in the stanza.  Four more points from Neely pushed the visitor's lead to 19-12 at the 9:37 mark.  The Rangers trimmed WSU's lead to 21-18 with just over seven minutes remaining before halftime.  Parkside capped a 15-0 run with a three-point play, which gave the hosts a 29-21 lead at the 3:02 mark. A bucket from graduate student James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Chicago Simeon) with 2:44 left in the half ended a scoring drought of 6:15.  The Rangers led 36-27 at halftime after a triple from Brandon Trimble with time running out.

A running jumper from sophomore guard Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) brought WSU within six, 39-33, at the 16:40 mark of the second half and a jumper by freshman forward Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) cut the home advantage to 39-35 with 16:02 to play.  The momentum stayed with the Green & Gold after a bucket from Talbot at the 15:36 mark, pushed the run to 10-3 and trimmed the deficit to two, 39-37.  Baskets from Gordon and Marshall brought the Warriors within two, 50-48, with 11:05 left in the contest.  The deficit stayed at two, 54-52, after a driving layup from freshman forward Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) at the 9:20 mark.  After Neely split a pair of free throws, WSU trailed 59-57 with 6:40 left in regulation.  Parkside responded to take a 66-60 advantage.  Marshall knocked down a 10-foot jumper to keep the Warriors close, 66-62, at the 2:30 mark.  Talbot was unable to convert a three-point play and Wayne State trailed 66-64 with 1:39 remaining.  A dunk by Grant tied the game at 66-66 with just over a minute remaining, but Trimble banked in a jumper with 41.4 seconds left to give the lead back to the Rangers.  Marshall answered with a contested layup with 20.6 seconds remaining tying the game at 68-68.  Parkside was unable to get a shot off as regulation ended.

The Warriors scored the first three points of the extra session as Neely started overtime.  Parkside's Ramar Evans was fouled behind the arc and connected on all three free throws to tie the game at 71-71 at the 2:52 mark.  Neely put WSU back on top with an 18-foot  jumper with 1:59 remaining, but it would be Wayne State's final points.  The game was deadlocked at 73-73, but Solomon Oraegbu made one of two free throws to give UWP a one-point advantage with 68 seconds left to play.  With Wayne State trailing 76-73 and 7.9 seconds remaining, sophomore guard LJ DeWolf (Ypsilanti, Mich.) missed a last-second three-point attempt.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely finished with 26 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, while Talbot and Marshall scored 14 points.  Gordon chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.

LEADING THE RANGERS

ONE BIG THING
Wayne State out-shot Parkside from the floor (50 percent compared to 44 percent) but the Rangers went 23-of-27 from the charity stripe, while the Warriors were 9-of-13.  In addition, WSU only connected on two of its 15 three-point attempts.
