Men's Basketball Looks to Extend Win Streak on the Road This Weekend

 

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team is set to play a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games this week on Thursday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Feb. 1. Thursday's game is against Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's game is against Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. at 3:00 p.m.

The Lakers (6-9, 3-4 GLIAC)

The Lakers will look to continue their winning streak of two games.  The Lakers had a victorious weekend defeating both Purdue Northwest, and Wisconsin Parkside at home on Jan. 20 and 22. With the wins, the Lakers record improves to 8-11 overall and a 5-6 mark in GLIAC play. Lake Superior is led by senior forward Ke'Montrece Collins who is averaging 14.7 points per game, and 15.7 in conference games. Collins also leads the Lakers in rebounds per game with 7.6. Freshman Nigel Colvin has been a solid addition to the lineup this season as he has averaged 10.1 points per game this season, and 11.1 points per game in conference games. Sophomores C.J. Robinson (9.8 ppg) and Justin Fischer (4.2 rebounds per game, 3.9 assists per game) have been steady players for the Lakers in their second season.

The Lakers are averaging 72.2 points per game this season with a 42.7 shooting percentage and 31.0 rebounds per game. 

Wayne State Warriors (4-11, 1-10 GLIAC)

 The Wayne State Warriors looks to snap their eight game losing streak on Thursday against the Lakers. The two teams have already met this season, in Sault Ste Marie, Mich. where the Warriors fell short in a 67-63 loss. The Warriors are led by Brilen Neely who is averaging 20.2 points per game. In the contest earlier this season Neely scored 16 against the Lakers. James Gordon leads the team with 7.7 rebounds per game. 

Wayne State is averaging 68.7 points per game in 2019-20 with a 44.8 shooting percentage and 37.6 rebounds per game. 

Ashland Eagles (10-9, 3-8 GLIAC)

The Ashland Eagles are coming off of a GLIAC weekend sweep as they defeated both the Northwood Timberwolves and the Saginaw Valley Cardinals. Ashland has already made a trip to Sault Ste Marie, Mich. this season, where they suffered a 99-69 loss to the Lakers. The Eagles are led by senior center, Drew Noble who is averaging 15.7 points per game this season, and 12.6 in conference play. Noble also averages 5.9 rebounds per game.  Leading the way during GLIAC play is senior guard Rodrick Caldwell with 13.6 points per game. Redshirt junior, Aaron Thompson averages 7.6 rebounds per game, with 7.9 during conference play. 

Ashland is averaging 72.5 points per game in 2019-20 with a 44.4 shooting percentage and 34.8 rebounds per game. 

Up Next

The Lakers will return home to host the Northwood University Timberwolves on Thursday, Feb. 6th at 7:30 p.m. and will follow with a home game against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 3:00pm. Both games will be GLIAC North Division competitions and will be held in the Ronald "Bud" Cooper Gymnasium.
