COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (0-1 overall) started the 2018-19 season at Ohio Dominican (1-0 overall) on Friday night but fell 92-79. This contest and Sunday's matchup against Lake Erie are part of the GLIAC/G-MAC Challenge.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) tied the game at 8-8 at the 14:46 mark.
Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) capped an 8-0 run with a mid-range jumper, giving the visitors a 12-8 advantage with 13:24 to play in the first half. Both teams went cold and the contest was dead locked at 15-15 at the 8:47 mark. Ohio Dominican used an 8-0 run of its own to take a 22-15 with 7:23 remaining. Five straight points from
Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge), including a three-pointer kept the Green & Gold close at 30-22 at the 4:03 mark. With just over two minutes left in the half, ODU stretched its lead to 11, 38-27. Owens-White connected again from behind the arc trimming the deficit to 38-32 with 41 seconds left before halftime. The Panthers led 41-34 at the break.
The Warriors began the second half on a 6-2 run to pull with four at 44-40.
Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) sparked the rally with four points. The deficit remained at four after a jumper from
Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) and a triple by
Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King). Cochran grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back for two points and a 17-foot jumper from Marshall brought WSU within one at 58-57 at the 10:52. However, Ohio Dominican responded with a 6-0 run, taking a 67-59 lead. The home advantage reached 16, 82-66, with 4:12 remaning in the game. A 9-0 run from the Warriors made things interesting again as Wayne State trailed 82-76 following a layup from Murray at the 2:34 mark. The Panthers would pull away to win 92-79.

Cochran posted a team-high 21 points, while Owens-White tallied 19 points and Marshall finished with 12 points. Wilson chipped in 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
LEADING THE PANTHERS
Sam Hickey totaled a game-high 27 points, powered by 7-of-12 shooting from three-point range. Hasan Varence also finished with 27 points and collected a game-high nine boards.
