Williams Breaks Record, Leads Oilers to 41-17 Win at Lake Erie
Senior running back Monterae Williams led the Oilers football team to a 41-17 victory over Lake Erie College on Saturday, Oct. 20 in Painesville, Ohio as he became Findlay's new all-time leading rusher.
Williams, who needed only seven yards coming into the game to break the record, sprinted his way to a 28-yard gain on his first attempt to set the mark. He wasn't finished there however as he ended the game with a career-high 268 yards and five touchdowns on 39 carries.
His total rushing yards in the win were the second highest single game mark in school history while his 39 carries tied for fourth best all-time.
The Oilers, who improved to 5-2 on the season with the win, got on the scoreboard first when freshman kicker Josh Rode booted a 22-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Storm would then tie the game early in the second quarter before Williams took over with three scoring runs to make the score 24-3 in favor of Findlay.
Williams scored on a 5-yard run with 7:31 to play in the first half and then added a 4-yard score with only 2:21 remaining in the opening half. He then scored on a 6-yard run with 10:16 to play in the third before the Storm answered the scoring run with a touchdown of their own.
Leading 24-10 in the fourth quarter, Rode tacked on another field goal with 12:07 left to play before Williams once again found the end zone for his fourth touchdown of the game. The 8-yard touchdown extended the Oilers lead to 34-10 with 6:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Lake Erie would tack on another touchdown in the fourth quarter before Williams added his fifth touchdown of the game, this time on a 5-yard touchdown with only 42 ticks left.
Williams' big day should not overshadow the Oilers defensive performance as they forced four turnovers and came away with five sacks in the victory.
Junior defensive back Ray Ballard spearheaded the Oilers defensive efforts with 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Junior linebacker Eric Palmore-Lett added 13 stops while sophomore defensive end Josh Lee made two sacks to go along with six tackles.
Offensively, senior quarterback Clay Belton threw for 129 yards, but was picked off twice.
Junior tight end Jaryd Brown caught three passes for 49 yards while junior receiver Seth White had three receptions for 43 yards.
The Oilers will be out on the road again next week as they travel to #6 Ashland University for a rival game against the Eagles. The GLIAC contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Ashland, Ohio.
