DETROIT -- In needs of victories to capture a spot in the GLIAC Tournament, the Wayne State University volleyball team (11-16, 6-9 GLIAC) did itself no favors on Friday night. Northern Michigan (19-8, 8-7 GLIAC) swept the Warriors by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-15. The top three seeds in each division earn a spot in postseason play plus the next two best records regardless of division.
HOW IT HAPPENED- The Wildcats led 7-5 to begin the opening set. After a kill from
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption), the Warriors tied the set at 9-9. NMU pulled away and led 19-15 after a WSU ball handling error, which forced
Tim Koth to take a timeout.
Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) trimmed the deficit to two at 22-20 with a kill but NMU would control the final points and win 25-21.
- The Warriors led 10-7 in the second set after a point from
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill). A 7-1 Wildcat run gave the visitors a 14-11 advantage and NMU would cruise to the 25-18 set-two victory.
- WSU won the first five points of the third set and eventually led 12-10 following a NMU service error. The Wildcats would take a 17-12 lead after going on a 7-0 run, which included both of WSU's timeouts. The Green & Gold would only collect three more points the rest of the way and fall 25-15.
LEADING THE WARRIORS- Moore finished with 16 kills while Shell tallied six kills.
-
Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) collected 22 assists while Moore led the team with nine digs.
