Women's Basketball Closes Out Season With a Hard-Fought Game Against Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell by a final score of 71-65 to the Ferris State Bulldogs on Thursday, Feb. 21 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game in Big Rapids, Mich. 

The Lakers and the Bulldogs scored an identical 18 points in the first quarter. Senior Lexie Khon netted the first two points of the game as she scored on a layup just :13 seconds into the game. Ferris State would respond, scoring the game's next seven points to take a five point lead over the Lakers. 

Khon would add five more points for the Lakers in the first three minutes of play, as she recorded all seven of the team's points. With the Bulldogs adding the next five points, senior Abigail Ostman would make a three-point jump shot with 5:30 remaining in the quarter to make it a 14-10 game. 

As the Lakers looked to even the score, senior Morgan Villemure added another three-point shot for the Lakers to bring the visiting team within three points (16-13). In the closing minute of the quarter, Sadie DeWildt would add three points from outside and Villemure made a layup as the buzzer sounded to even the score at 18. 

Mattison Rayman made a layup in the first minute of the second quarter to give the Lakers a 20-18 lead over the Bulldogs. After falling behind by four points, DeWildt would bring the Lakers back within a point when she made a three-point shot (26-25) with 2:54 left in the half. 

The Bulldogs would have a strong finish to the half as the host scored nine points in the final two minutes to hold an 11 point lead over the Lakers after 20 minutes of play (36-25). 

In the third quarter, the Lakers outscored the Bulldogs, 15-12. Senior Claire Radtke sparked the Laker offense in the first two minutes of the quarter as she made back-to-back three-point shots to close the lead to five points (36-31). After trading points for the next stretch of the game, the Lakers would once again watch Radtke make a three-pointer to cut the deficit to four points with 2:38 left in the quarter (44-40). Ferris State would cap off the scoring in the quarter to hold a 48-40 lead heading into the final ten minutes of play. 

Radtke would score the first points for the Lakers in the fourth quarter (48-42) and DeWildt would add three more points to keep the Lakers within reach of the Bulldogs (50-45). 

The Bulldogs would extend the lead to 11 points with 4:23 remaining in the game but the Lakers showed no quit in the late stages of the game. Khon and Radtke combined for seven points to make it a six point game with 2:44 to go (60-54). 

Despite the late effort by the Lakers, the game would end with the Lakers falling by a final score of 71-65.

Radtke posted a team-leading 21, which is the most she has posted in a single game in her career as a Laker. Khon recorded 19 points in the game to rank second on the team, finishing her collegiate career with 1,047.
