Wayne State hands SVSU its first GLIAC loss

DETROIT – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team played its third straight road contest in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at Wayne State University on Tuesday in Detroit.

The Warriors handed the Cardinals their first GLIAC loss of the season, sweeping SVSU 28-26, 25-8, 25-19. The loss drops SVSU to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • SVSU was able to pull ahead by four points on two separate occasions in the first set, but WSU battled back and the teams traded points down the stretch.
  • After saving a set point in the first with a Madison Thompson kill, the Cardinals earned a set point at 25-24.
  • Wayne State was able to answer and closed out the set with a kill from Maddie Morrison, followed by a Sam Palazzolo service ace.
  • The second set was all Warriors as the home team jumped out a 9-2 lead and scored the final seven points of the frame, taking advantage of five consecutive SVSU attacking errors.
  • Early in the third, WSU used a 7-1 run to build an 11-4 advantage. The Cardinals rallied and cut the deficit to 13-9, forcing a Warrior timeout.
  • The Warriors haled on the rest of the way in the third to close out the sweep.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Madison Thompson and Sarah Veale each recorded seven kills to lead the Cardinals.
  • Peyton Gerstacker finished with 17 assists and 11 digs, both team highs for SVSU.
  • The Cardinals were successful on defense at the net with nine total blocks, including one solo and four block assists from Gerstacker. Patricia Pratt added five block assists.
