Men's Basketball Drops 2018 Finale at GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (1-7 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) finished its first GLIAC road trip of the season at Grand Valley State (7-2 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) on Saturday night and the Warriors were unable to match a strong offensive night from the Lakers, falling 95-62 in the final game of 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams started slow before Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) hit a three-pointer at the 17:44 mark to give WSU a 3-0 lead.  Davis followed with another triple with 16:51 left before halftime to extend the visitors' advantage to 6-0.  The next two baskets were also treys from Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) and Davis, bringing WSU's lead to 12-3 at the 14:20 mark.  Two free throws by Davis made it 16-7 but the Lakers would come back and tie the game at 18-18 wth 9:03 to play.  GVSU used a 22-1 run over the next 5:33 as Wayne State went 0-for-10 from the floor to take a 38-19 lead with 3:40 remaning before halftime.  The home team held onto a 44-25 advantage at the break.

Grand Valley State continued to control the temp in the second half and led 51-29 at the 16:15 mark.  The Warriors trimmed GVSU's lead to 15, 53-38, following a jumper by Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron).  Wayne State was unable to create any momentum as GVSU went on to win 92-62.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Davis totaled a career-best 23 points, while Owens-White tallied 16 points and Cochran finished with 12.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Hunter Hale led a trio of Lakers scoring in double figures with 19 points, while Justin Greason scored 17 points and Jeremiah Ferguson chipped in 16.

TEAM STATS
The Green & Gold shot 31 percent from the floor compared to GVSU's 54 percent shooting performance.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will return to the court in 2019 when they host Northern Michigan on Jan. 3rd at 7:30 p.m.  Every home doubleheader in 2019 will be televised live on Comcast CN900.
