Men's Basketball Outscores Pride for Third Straight Win

The Warriors made 20-of-22 free throws on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (6-3 GLIAC) wrapped up its series against Purdue Northwest (5-6 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and the Warriors won their third straight game, 92-89, powered by all five starters scoring in double figures.  The 92 points in the highest total this season and the most since WSU scored 90 points in a victory vs. PNW on Feb. 16, 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Th Green & Gold started slow, trailing 5-2 two minutes into the action. Back-to-back triples from junior Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) gave WSU a 10-5 advantage with 12:41 to play in the opening half. Sophomore Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) pushed the home lead to 14-9 with a bucket at the 11:08 mark. A layup by redshirt junior Darien Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) after an offensive rebound made it 18-11 with 9:19 to play before halftime.  The Pride used a 10-2 run to tie the game at 24-24 following a layup by Jacob Stone at the 4:35 mark and a free throw by Anthony Barnard.  Redshirt sophomore Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) scored consecutive baskets to regain control and give Wayne State a 28-24 lead with 1:46 remaining.  The Warriors put the clamps down on defense as Purdue Northwest went the final 4:35 of the stanza without a field goal, allowing Wayne State to take a 32-24 lead into the halftime break.

Marshall knocked down a long-range jumper to open the scoring in the second half before a layup from Owens-White pushed the lead to 37-24 at the 19:05 mark.  Mikell Cooper cut the deficit to six, 39-33, with 16:39 left to play.  Gregory Boyle connected from behind the arc to make it a two-point game, 42-40, at the 14:46 mark and Logan Phillips followed a three-pointer of his own to give the Pride a one-point lead.  Another Phillips jumper made it 45-44 in favor of the visitors but WSU would regain momentum and lead 53-47 after a jumper by Talbot.  Freshman Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) connected from deep, giving the Warriors a 60-54 advantage with 8:29 remaining.  Purdue Northwest was within two, 66-64, after an Anthony Irvin triple at the 5:21 mark.  A three-point play by Williams pushed WSU ahead 72-64 with 4:35 left and a layup by Lewis made it 76-68 at the 2:42 mark.  A pair of free throws from redshirt senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) gave the home team an 80-72 lead with1:23 left in regulation.  The Pride made five three-pointers in the final 30 seconds but WSU made all of its free throws down the stretch to hang on for a three-point win. 

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Owens-White paced five starters scoring in double-digits with 27 points to with a career-high 11 rebounds to post his first double-double of the season.  Marshall and Nelly both scored 15 points, while Neely dished out seven assists.  Lewis tallied 14 points, while Williams chipped in 13 points.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Phillips lead PNW with 20 points, while Cooper finished with 16 points and Barnard scored 15.  Boyle (12 points) and Jyrus Freels *11 points) also scored in double figures.

ONE BIG THING
The game was decided at the charity stripe as Wayne State went 20-of-22 (91 percent) at the line, while Purdue Northwest finished 10-of-16 (62 percent).

UP NEXT
The Warriors will make up one of the two games at Grand Valley State on Tuesday with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 PM.
