Cardinals edged by Bulldogs 1-0 in season opener

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team opened the 2021 spring season with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on the road against Ferris State University Friday in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Cardinals were outshot 25-4 but stayed in the game throughout as the defense held up for SVSU, led by the strong play of senior goalkeeper Alyssa Watts. The Bulldogs found the game's lone goal in the 52nd minute and held on for the 1-0 win.

The loss drops SVSU to 0-1-0 in the GLIAC to start the season.

Watts finished with nine saves for the Cardinals. Ferris State took nine corner kicks to one for SVSU. Amy Babon recorded three shots to lead the Cardinal offense.

Grace Verhage scored the winning goal for the Bulldogs (4-0-0) on an assist from Abigail Gilmore.

SVSU remains on the road to take on Northwood University at 2:30 pm Sunday in Midland, Mich.
