Women's Basketball Wraps Up Road Series against Parkside

KENOSHA, Wisc. -  The Lake Superior State women's basketball team dropped a game to the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers by a final score of 88-71 on Sunday, Feb. 21 in the De Simone Gymnasium in Kenosha, Wisc. in the final game of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) weekend series.

The Lakers had a strong first half against the Rangers, trailing by a point after the first twenty minutes of play. In the first quarter, the Rangers outscored the Lakers, 22-17 and the Lakers would respond in the second quarter, outscoring Parkside, 23-19. 

Sadie DeWildt opened the scoring for the Lakers with a three point jump shot in the opening minute to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Makenzie Bray would score the Lakers second basket from behind the three point line to tie the game at six within the first two minutes of the first quarter. 

Mattison Rayman, who finished the game with a career-high 26 points, would score seven of the Lakers next nine points. 

After falling behind by 13 points in the second quarter (30-17), the Lakers sparked a comeback to finish the first half strong. DeWildt and Kelly Olthof would bring the Lakers within nine points (30-21) with 6:30 left on the clock. 

Bray would score on consecutive three point attempts for the Lakers to trail by 36-27 with just over four minutes left in the half. With 1:35 remaining, Rayman would propel the Lakers as the sophomore forward scored six points for the Lakers with three field goals (41-37). 

With time expiring, Bray made a three pointer as the buzzer rang to make it a one point game (41-40) after the first twenty minutes. 

The Rangers would not let the Lakers overtake the lead as Parkside outscored the Lakers, 30-10, in the third quarter. Alexis Vaughn hit back-to-back three pointers in the first minute of the second half and Parkside would hold a 10 point lead within the first two minutes of the third quarter (50-40). 

The Lakers scored 21 points in the fourth quarter as compared to 17 points from the Rangers. Rayman would score seven straight points for the Lakers but the lead that the Rangers built in the third quarter was insurmountable. 

The game would end with Parkside winning by a final score of 88-71.  

Breaking Down the Game

Rayman led the team with a career-high 26 points in the game as she went 9-for-16 in 23 minutes on the floor. Rayman has posted nine games this season with 10 or more points, and three games with 20 or more points.  In addition, the sophomore forward made eight of her nine free throw attempts against the Rangers. Rayman also added four rebounds and an assist for the Lakers.

Bray tied her season-high with 16 points in the game, her eighth game this season with a double-figure point total. The forward went 5-for-14 including a team-best 4-for-8 in three pointers in the game. Bray recorded three rebounds and three assists for the Lakers. 

DeWildt rounded out the Lakers top three scorers in the game as she added 10 points for LSSU as well as a team-leading seven assists. 

The Lakers finished the game with a 43.9 shooting percentage, going 25-for-57 against Parkside. On the other end of the floor, the Rangers went 31-for-62 in the game to total a 50.0 shooting percentage. Lake Superior was outrebounded by Parkside, 39-25, in the game.

What's Next

The Lakers will close out the regular season next weekend with a home series against the Ashland University Eagles. The series will open on Friday, Jan. 26 at 8:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium and will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
