Women's Basketball Suffers Loss to Northwood, 78-63

DETROIT- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (4-2 Overall, 4-2 GLIAC) played its second game of the weekend homestand on Saturday afternoon against Northwood (4-2 Overall, 4-2 GLIAC) losing 78-63.

FIRST HALF RECAP
The Warriors started off strong with a layup from Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) off an assist from Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.).

The first period was back and forth with four lead changes.  Wayne State went on an eight-point run to lead 17-9 and had a 26-20 advantage after 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, WSU's lead did not last for long as Northwood fought back outscoring the Warriors 25-17 in the period. 

WSU was down 45-43 at the half.

SECOND HALF RECAP
The Warriors started off the third quarter with a bucket from Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) with an assist from George.

The Timberwolves found their pace and ended up scoring 21 points in the third quarter to lead 66-55 heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, WSU started off with a jumper from George. Then a triple from Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) with an assist from Anna Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich/ Flint Powers Catholic) brought the Warriors within six (66-60) with 5:21 remaining.

That was the closest WSU managed to get as NU scored the next eight points and ended up winning 78-63.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
George led with a game-high 22 points, and five rebounds.  Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich./Belleville) chipped in with 13 points and Cherney added 10 points and seven rebounds.  Perez had a game-best eight rebounds.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Maizie Taylor scored a team-high 16 points.  Alana Nelson had 14 points, Makenzie Todd totaled 13 points, and Brooke Ditto contributed 12 points.  Nelson and Ditto tied for team-high honors with six rebounds apiece.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State made 72% (8-of-11) of its free throws and 40% (25-of-63) from the floor.  Northwood shot 64% (9-of-14) from the foul line and connected on 46% (31-of-67) of its field goals. NU and the Warriors tied in rebounding 38-38, but the Timberwolves took advantage of 15 WSU turnovers scoring 19 points while WSU only had seven points off eight Northwood miscues.
