The Warriors connected on five buckets from long distance.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (8-7 overall, 2-5 GLIAC) was upended, 67-41, by third-ranked Grand Valley State (14-1 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) at the Matthaei on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Each team scored a bucket within the first minute of play, before GVSU went on an eight-point run to lead 10-2 at the 6:46 mark.  Senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) ended the 3:37 scoring drought for WSU by draining a triple.  The teams would then exchange baskets.  After allowing one more Laker field goal for the quarter, junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) made a shot from long distance with 3:14 on the clock to cut the Wayne State deficit to four at 14-10.  Grand Valley State earned the final five points of the quarter to lead 19-10 at the end of the first stanza.

The Warriors were outscored 4-1 in the initial 2:29 of the second stanza.  Senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) was the first WSU player to score a field goal in the period with a triple at the 7:31 mark (23-14).  Grand Valley State's Cassidy Boensch made a layup, but Matus once again connected from beyond the arc to make it an eight-point game (25-17).  GVSU tallied the next four points before junior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) contributed a bucket for the Green and Gold.  Over the final 2:16 of the half, the Warriors outscored Grand Valley State, 7-6, with Johnson recording all seven of the points for the Green and Gold.  Wayne State trailed 35-26 at halftime.

After two GVSU free throws, sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) made the first field goal of the second half at the 9:18 mark to trim the GVSU margin to nine at 37-28.  During a 2:12 scoring drought for WSU, the Lakers tallied four points to extend their lead to 41-28.  Sophomores Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) and Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) each made a bucket, cutting the scoring deficit to nine points (41-32).  In the final 5:56 of the period, Wayne State was outscored, 7-4, with all four Green and Gold points contributed by sophomore Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville).  WSU trailed 48-36 with one quarter left.

Neither team scored a field goal in the first 4:15 of the final stanza.  After the Lakers tallied four points, freshman Rebecca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) scored a point from the charity stripe at the 5:24 mark.  GVSU went on an 11-point spurt over the next 3:52.  Perez scored the final four Green and Gold points of the game with two free throws and a layup.  Grand Valley State recorded four points to conclude the contest.  The Warriors fell to the No. 3-Lakers, 67-41.
