Michigan Tech Defeats Wayne State 84-46

Wayne State Quotes

Detroit
– The Wayne State women's basketball team had no answer for 11 Michigan Tech three-pointers as the top-ranked Huskies defeated the Warriors 84-46 Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

Michigan Tech (9-0, 5-0 GLIAC) did not commit its first turnover until the 15:19 mark in the second half. After going toe-to-toe with Michigan Tech to begin the game, Wayne State (1-8, 0-5 GLIAC) was unable to recover from a 13-0 first half run by the Huskies.

Sophomore guard Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) led WSU with team-highs of 10 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) chipped in nine points and five rebounds while freshman guard Paige Sickmiller (Washington, Mich./Romeo) had Wayne State's best shooting day, going 3-for-4 and finishing with seven points off the bench. For the second consecutive game, junior guard Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) had three assists.

The Huskies scored 22 points off of 16 WSU turnovers and finished ahead of the Warriors in rebounding (35-31), assists (22-5) and steals (8-4) while shooting 46.5 percent to Wayne State's 31.3.

The first half began in fine fashion for Wayne State when freshman forward Chelsea Davis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem), who made her first start since being injured, stepped outside to drain a three-pointer from the corner to give WSU a 3-0 lead. Freshman forward Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and Bowers scored one and two points from the foul line respectively and with 14:10 to play in the opening period the Warriors found themselves up 6-5 on the Huskies.

However, the Huskies proceeded to go on the aforementioned 13-0 run over the next three minutes to give themselves a comfortable 18-6 lead. WSU responded by scoring six of the next nine points thanks to three jumpers by Sickmiller to trim the lead to within single digits at 21-12. But MTU closed the half out on an 18-8 run to end the comeback bid.

The halftime break did nothing to cool off the Huskies as Michigan Tech shot 51.9 percent in the second period and built its lead to as many as 41 points (70-29) midway through the period before ultimately winning 84-46.

Michigan Tech's Sam Hoyt and Danae Danen scored 16 points apiece to lead both teams.

Wayne State will take the week off before hosting Madonna on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 3:00 p.m.
