Second half rally falls short at CSU-Pueblo

Hentges scores four goals in five point performance

PUEBLO, Colo. - Concordia-St. Paul (2-2) women's lacrosse erased a four goal deficit in the second half before falling 11-10 on the road at Colorado State University, Pueblo (1-2) on a cold, windy evening at Gonzales Stadium.

Concordia will finish its five game non-conference tour of Rocky Mountain (RMAC) conference opponents on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Fort Lewis. It will be the third consecutive game played at CSU-Pueblo's Gonzales Stadium.

CSP junior Maddie Hentges led Concordia with four goals in a five-point performance, also adding an assist. Izzy Snow and Sara McNicoll each had two goal games and Alina Boyce had a goal and an assist.

Concordia started the scoring early as junior Kailey Heinl scored on a pass from junior Kaci Reid in the second minute. The Thunderwolves scored the next five goals to claim their first of two four goal advantages.

Hentges scored her first goal in the 24th minute to conclude the first half scoring, and scored the first goal of the second half as part of a 3-0 run to pull the Golden Bears within one, 5-4 in the third minute of the second half.

CSU-Pueblo scored three in a row to reclaim its four goal lead, 8-4 with just over 22 minutes to play.

The Golden Bears went on their second three goal run with McNicoll scoring a pair of goals around another Hentges score.

Trailing by just one, the two teams traded goals until Boyce netted the game-tying shot with 4:11 to go in the 26th minute.

CSUP's Taylor Christensen answered with the game winner just over a minute later, her fourth goal of the game. She also had seven draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Reid had a look at another game-tying shot that was saved by Ane Marie Horton with 26 seconds remaining.

The Thunderwolves out-shot Concordia 31-27 in the game with CSP holding a 17-14 second half advantage. Concordia also had a strong second half edge in ground balls (17-10) for a 26-21 full game edge. CSU-Pueblo was strong on the draw, 16-7 including 11-4 in the second half and were more efficient advancing the ball going 18-23 in clears compared to CSP's 18-26.

Concordia junior goalie Katie Lottsfeldt registered an impressive 14 saves in the net including 10 in a busy first half while Horton had 11 total saves for the Thunderwolves. Lottsfeldt also had a team-leading seven ground balls.

Three other Golden Bears, Boyce, McNicoll and Lexi Stanley had three ground balls apiece.

CSU-Pueblo's Allison Wurscher and Elyse Ingram each had three point games (2g, 1a). Ingram added four ground balls and seven draw controls.
