Panthers Edge Chargers in Final Seconds

Davenport's Scout Nelson was fouled with less than a second left in regulation, and sank two free throws to send the Hillsdale College women's basketball team to a frustrating 77-75 loss to the Panthers Sunday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Hillsdale is right back in action Tuesday night against Southern Indiana in Evansville.

Freshman forward Sydney Mills, who scored a season-high 12 points, scooped up an offensive rebound and converted a layup that tied the game at 75 with four seconds left. However, a foul was called on the Chargers less than a second before overtime was to begin, and Hillsdale was left with as close a loss as you can have.

Davenport led throughout the second half but Hillsdale was able to tie the game twice in the final minutes. The Panthers shot just 36 percent from the field, but held a 30-24 scoring edge on 3-pointers and a 21-13 scoring advantage from the free throw line in this game.

While Nelson hit the game-deciding free throws, Toni Grace (30 points) and Elise Scaggs (20 points) accounted for well over half the Panther points in this game.

Sophomore guard Lauren Daffenberg led the Chargers with 18, making four 3-point baskets. Junior guard Jaycie Burger was 5-for-6 from the field, 2-for-2 on threes and 4-for-4 on free throws, scoring a season-high 16 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Senior Sydney Anderson added 10 points, while Mills came off the bench to record her first career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
