Men's Basketball Wins First League Game, 69-64, at Ashland

The WSU defense used a 12-minute AU field goal drought to power the victory.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (4-3 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) won a hard-fought battle, 69-64, at Ashland (6-3 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) on Saturday night.  It was the first road win of the series for WSU since Dec. 10, 2016.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A triple from sophomore Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) gave the Warriors a 5-3 lead at the 18:24 mark.  The Eagles led 6-5 at the arrival of the game's first media timeout with exactly 16 minutes left in the opening half.  Freshman Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) connected from deep to give WSU an 8-7 advantage at the 12:20 mark and another trey from Marshall with 11:40 left in the half made it 11-10 in the favor of the visitors.  Freshman Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) hit a turn around jumper to keep the Green & Gold on top by one, 13-12, midway through the stanza.  Another three-pointer, this one from senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) pushed the Warriors advantage to 18-12 at the 8:23 juncture.  An old-fashioned three-point play by Neely gave Wayne State a 21-15 lead with 6:30 to play before halftime.  Back-to-back jumpers by senior Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) gave WSU a 27-21 advantage at the 4:14 mark.  Ashland cut the margin to two, 29-27, with 60 seconds to play.  A scramble underneath the basket produced a layup for freshman Cadin Augustine (Ypsilanti, Mich.) at the 20-second mark before an alley-oop from Drew Nobble to Derek Koch with time expiring put the halftime score at 31-29 in favor of the Warriors.

Ashland started the half with five quick points to take a 34-31 lead forcing head coach David Greer to use an early timeout.  The Warriors trailed 42-39 at the 15:38 mark.  A bucket from Marshall tied the game at 46-46 with 11:50 remaining and a pair of second chance points from Murray put the visitors on top 48-46 at the 11:28 mark.  A three-pointer by Marshall gave Wayne State a 51-49 advantage with 9:50 remaining.  A jumper by graduate student James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Chicago Simeon) extended the WSU lead to 56-51 advantage at the 8:26 mark.  An 18-foot jumper by Murray gave WSU a three-point lead at  61-58 with 5:32 to play.  One free throw by Neely put WSU ahead 62-61 lead at the 2:03 mark.  AU lived at the charity stripe as the Wayne State defense held the Eagles without a field goal from the 12:59 mark until the 56-second mark.  Noble's three-point play with 56 seconds remaining tied the game at 64-64, but Neely answered with a conventional three-point play of his own at the 36-second mark to give WSU a 67-64 advantage.  Following a defensive stop for the Warriors and two missed free throws by Murray, the Eagles called a timeout trailing by three with 18.5 seconds left in regulation.  A missed three-pointer from Brandon Haraway was rebounded by Neely, who connected on both of his free throws after being fouled to seal the road victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely led WSU with 19 points, while Murray finished with 18 points and Marshall chipped in with 13 points.  Murray posted his third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.

LEADING THE EAGLES
Noble led all scorers with 20 points, while Rodrick Caldwell poured in 16 points.  Aaron Thompson pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
