Men's Basketball Collects First League Win Over Northwood

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (2-4, 1-2 GLIAC) earned a 65-57 victory over Northwood (3-6, 1-3 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  The Warriors did not make a three-pointer but used a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint to secure their first league win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU tallied the first six points of the game and led 6-0 after a pair of free throws from Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) at the 17:41 mark.  A long two-point jumper Jack Ammerman pushed the visitors ahead 9-8 with 15:30 to play.  An offensive rebound and a put back by David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy) tied the game at 12-12 and a layup from Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) gave the Green & Gold a 14-12 lead at the 13:16 mark.  Another bucket by Williams pushed the margin to 20-16 with 8:55 left in the half.  The margin grew to 23-16 on another two points from Williams and a contest basket by Neely made it 27-18 at the 4:20 mark.  Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) scored his first points of the season after returning from an injury, giving Wayne State a 31-23 advantage with 2:25 remaining before intermission.  Ammerman connected from behind the arc as the buzzer sounded to make the halftime score, 33-26, in favor of the Warriors.

The Timberwolves started the second half on an 8-1 run to tied the game at 34-34 with 17:23 left in the contest.  Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) broke the deadlock with a turnaround jumper at the 16:51 mark.  The momentum stayed with WSU and a layup by Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) brought the home advantage to 38-34.  A powerful Tyree Martin (Chicago, Ill. / Curie) dunk kept Wayne State on top, 44-40, with just over 13 minutes left to play.  A driving bucket from Williams and two Neely free throws pushed the home margin to eight, 50-42, at the 10:31 mark.  A three-point play by Owens-White gave the Green & Gold a 55-45 lead with 8:03 remaining.  An 8-0 NU run trimmed WSU's lead to 57-55 at the 2:15 mark.  However, the Warriors responded with a 6-0 spurt, taking a 63-55 advantage with 23 seconds left.  The final score would be 65-57.
