Women's Basketball Falls in Season Opener to Cedarville University

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets in the team's first game of 2021 Midwest Region Crossover by a final score of 88-37 on Friday, Nov. 12 in a nonconference game at the Callan Callan Athletic Center in Cedarville, Ohio

Following the first two quarters of play, the Lakers trailed the Yellow Jackets 41-17. Mackenzie Bray opened the scoring for the Lakers at 6:34 of the first quarter with a jump shot to make it a 4-2 game. Mattison Rayman made a layup and freshman CeCe Hacker made a free throw to bring the Lakers within three points (8-5) of Cedarville. After the Yellow Jackets went on a nine point run, the Lakers added two more field goals to end the first ten minutes of play, 17-9. 

The Yellow Jackets offense continued to control the game through the second quarter as the home team outscored the Lakers by a margin of 24-8. Rayman netted six of the team's eight points in the quarter. 

Through the final two quarters, Cedarville would continue to extend their lead. The Yellow Jackets added 24 points in the third quarter while the Lakers scored 10 points. In the final quarter, Cedarville outscored the Lakers 23-10. The game ended in a final score of 88-37. 

Breaking Down the Game:

Rayman led the team in points with 15 in the first nonconference game of her junior season. The Laker forward went 6-for-12 in the game as she played a team-high 30 minutes. Rayman's 13 rebounds also led the team against the Yellow Jackets as she posted a double-double in the loss. 

Junior Kelly Olthof tied her career-high in points with 10 in the game. Olthof was 5-for-7 in field goals while also adding five rebounds against Cedarville. 

The Lakers finished the game with a 31.4 shooting percentage, going 16-for-51 in the game. On the other end of the floor, the Yellow Jackets went 38-for-78 in the game to total a 48.7 shooting percentage. Both teams finished the game with 43 rebounds.

What's Next

The Lakers will play their second game of the Midwest Region Crossover tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against the Ohio Dominican Panthers at Cedarville University's Callan Athletic Center in Cedarville, Ohio.
