Volleyball Wins Twice on Final Day of Warrior Invite

DETROIT -- The Warrior Invitational continued on Saturday and the Wayne State University volleyball program (6-2) finished the tournament with a pair of five-set wins over Pitt-Johnstown (2-5) and Northwood (4-4).  Kamryn Duffield and Lauren VanderWal were both named to All-Tournament Team following the final match.

MATCH ONE vs. PITT-JOHNSTOWN (W, 3-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mountain Cats led 6-5 after a kill by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and a Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) service ace early in the first set.  Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) made it 9-8 Warriors and the momentum stayed with the Green & Gold as the home margin grew to 12-9.  The set was even at 14-14 and 17-17.  A kill and two aves by VanderWal gave WSU a 21-18 advantage.  Pitt-Johnstown came back to take a 22-21 lead but the Warriors would win four of the last five points to win 25-23.  A block by Shell sealed the victory.

UPJ led 6-2 to start the second set.  Kills from VanderWal and Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) plus a service ace by Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) tied the game at 9-9.  Keilyn Carpenter (Vermontville, Mich. / Maple Valley) gave WSU a 13-10 lead before back-to-back points by VanderWal stretched the home advantage to 17-14.  The Cats led 23-21 and would win 25-22.

Wayne State trailed 6-4 to begin the third set and eventually 9-6.  The upset-minded UPJ led 12-7, 16-11 and 19-14.  Giroux picked up consecutive kills to end a 4-0 run, bring WSU within one, 19-18.  The teams traded points until Pitt-Johnstown led 24-21.  The Warriors captured two straight points but a service error would give the visitors a 2-1 match lead.

The Green & Gold started fast in the fourth set, leading 6-2.  and 13-5.  A block by Duffield and Ella Uganski (Jenison, Mich.) put WSU on top 17-6.  The Mountain Cats attempted to get back into the set and trailed 20-12 but Wayne State wont he final five points, including kills from VanderWal and Chloe Clark (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson), to win 25-12.

WSU led the fifth and decisive set 5-1 after an ace by Shell.  A poor UPJ set made it 8-2 and a spike by Clark gave the Warriors an 11-7 advantage.  VanderWal carried the offense to the finish line with three kill sin the final four points to give WSU a 15-10 win and a 3-2 match triumph.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal had a massive match, finishing with a career-best 31 kills with a .324 hitting percentage to go with 13 digs and three assisted blocks.  Duffield finished with a season-high 57 assists to go with 15 digs.  Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) led the defense with 30 digs.

MATCH TWO vs. NORTHWOOD (W, 3-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

WSU led 7-4 to start the opening set but Northwood would responded and take a 10-9 advantage.  The Warriors used a kill and two aces from Morrison plus a NU error to take a 13-10 lead.  A point from Alex Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and a T-Wolves' error made it 19-14.  A 4-0 NU rally gave the visitors a 22-21 lead but Wayne State won the final four points to win 25-22.

Northwood led 6-3 early in the second set but WSU used a pair of points by VanderWal to go on top, 9-7.  A service ace by Duffield made it 14-9 and the home margin grew to 16-11.  Shell made it 22-15 with a spike of her own.  NU was able to pull within four, 22-18, but kills from Clark, Shell and VanderWal ended the set.

Northwood would win both sets three and four to force a fifth set.  NU controlled much of the third set but the Warriors were able to make it 24-22. WSU led the fourth set 17-11 but lost 25-23.

Wayne State trailed the fifth set 6-4 and 11-5.  Kendyl Andrews (Flushing, Mich.) came off the bench and provided solid serving, allowing WSU to trim NU's lead to one, 11-10.  NU held onto a 13-11 lead before an error and a kill from VanderWal made it 13-13.  A WSU error put the Timberwolves within a point of clinching.  However, the Warriors wont he final three points, including a kill from Morrison to give the Green & Gold the win.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal finished with 17 kills and 11 digs, while Duffield had 42 assists and 14 digs.  Benoit notched 23 digs.

ONE BIG THING
Duffield collected her 4,000th career assist, becoming just the fourth player in program history to achieve that milestone.

"Today was a war of attrition.  We battled both our opponents and the heat and executed just well enough to squeak out a couple of victories.  Congratulations to Kamryn on reaching the 4,000 career assist mark.  And to both her and Lauren for being named All Tournament.  It was well deserved."
