Men's Tennis Downs Northwestern Ohio, 4-1

The Warriors cap a busy two-day span with back-to-back wins.

DETROIT, Mich. -- It was another solid day for the Wayne State University men's tennis squad (4-1 overall) as they defeated the University of Northwestern Ohio (3-3 overall) by a 4-1 margin on Friday night at the Duchene Athletic Facility. UNOH entered the contest as the No. 4 ranked program in NAIA competition.

DOUBLES
Much like the previous four matches to begin the spring season, the Warriors excelled in doubles action as they won all three matches to earn the opening point.

The duo of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) once again put in strong work, winning 6-4 over the top doubles pairing of Northwestern Ohio in Sergio Conde and Giovanni Branchetti.

The action at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles both saw the Green and Gold victorious by the same score, 6-2. Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) won at No. 2 doubles, while Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) prevailed at No. 3. Laws and Kitayama were playing as a pairing for the first time.

SINGLES
The Warriors and Racers played to clinch, meaning the match ended once a team reached four points. That ended up being Wayne State, who snagged three points in singles to triumph over UNOH.

Laws capped a stellar day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mike Stieler at No. 3 singles.

Drenth made quick work of the first set over Conde (6-1) at the No. 1 spot. Conde retired in the second set with Drenth ahead 2-0, giving the Warrior the victory and another point for WSU.

Improving to 5-0 in singles play was Grey, who was pushed to two tiebreakers by Branchetti. Grey prevailed in both to win his match, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4). Grey's victory at the No. 2 spot officially clinched the win for Wayne State.

Playing in his first action of the spring season, junior Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderberg, Denmark) fell 1-6, 2-6 in straight sets.

With the match already clinched, both Kitayama and Kelt were unable to finish their respective matches. Kitayama lost his first set 4-6, but was ahead 5-4 in the second before the match was called. Kelt similarly lost his first set (1-6) and was ahead (3-1) when the action at the No. 5 spot was called early.

FROM COACH MORROW
"Really proud of the guys. These three matches [Toledo, Case Western Reserve, Northwestern Ohio] the last two days against this level of team really put them to the test both physically and mentally, and I couldn't be prouder of the way they stepped up, how they competed, and got the job done."

UP NEXT
Wayne State has earned a trip to Indianapolis, Ind. for the ITA Division II National Men's Team Indoor Championship thanks to their No. 5 national ranking and trip to the NCAA Championship match a season ago. The three day tournament-style event will begin on Friday, February 17, where the Warriors will battle No. 4 ranked Flagler College. The Round 1 match is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
