Women's Tennis Wins 5-2 at Findlay for Fifth Straight Victory

The Warriors win their first road match of the spring season.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- In its first road test of the spring, the Wayne State University women's tennis team (5-0 overall) passed with flying colors, as the team defeated the University of Findlay (3-4 overall) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Findlay YMCA East.

DOUBLES
The Warriors faced adversity for the first time this season, as Findlay swept the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the evening.

The pairings at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles both put up a fight, but ultimately fell by the same score of 7-5 to their Oilers opponents. At No. 1 doubles were Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland), while Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) comprised of the duo at the No. 2 spot.

Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) lost 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold picked up their play in singles action and won five of the six matches to roar back and claim victory.

Findlay jumped ahead 2-0 with their victory at the No. 3 singles spot from Emily Hadler, who defeated Arafat in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Wayne State earned its first point on the scoreboard with Gorgidze's triumph at No. 4. She handled Zuzanna Krygier in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Komar, who did not see the court in any fashion last weekend of action, came back in full force against the Oilers. She trailed after losing the first set to Laiying Alvarado 5-7, but won the second set handily 6-0 and earned the point with a 7-5 victory in the final set.

Keeping with the trend, the Warriors earned a third point at the No. 1 spot. Ruyssen, similarly to Komar, lost the first set (3-6), but stormed back to win the next two, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

The clinching point came at the No. 5 singles spot with Szpakowska, who was victorious over her opponent, 6-4, 6-4, to give WSU the match.

However, the team was not done winning, as Weekes won in a major battle with Lidia Laskova at the No. 6 spot. The freshman Warrior claimed the first set with relative ease (6-0), but fell in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (0), in the second set. The third set was a race to 10 points, and Weekes prevailed by a 10-7 margin.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will stay on the road and face Indiana (Pa.) in a neutral site contest at Sandusky, Ohio, on Sunday afternoon. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. from Court 1 Tennis in Sandusky.
