UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game by a final score of 73-43 on Saturday, Jan. 29 in University Center, Mich.
Through the first half of the game, the Lakers were unable to find a way to stop the Cardinals. Saginaw Valley outscored the Lakers by a 21-3 margin in the first quarter and followed with an 18-8 advantage in the second quarter. The Lakers trailed 39-11 at the close of the first half.
The Lakers responded in the second half as the team outscored the Cardinals in the third quarter, 19-18. Senior Makenzie Bray made a three pointer with 7:30 left on the clock and senior Mackenzie Kalchik followed with a three pointer at the 5:54 mark. On the next scoring play, Bray added her second three of the quarter with 5:18 to play, completing an 11-point scoring run for the Lakers. Later in the third quarter, Mattison Rayman added four straight points for the Lakers, making it a 49-26 game in favor of SVSU. At the end of the third quarter, the Cardinals held a 57-30 lead over Lake Superior State.
To open the fourth quarter, the two conference rivals traded three-pointers with redshirt freshman Brittany Bowman making the shot from beyond the arch for the Lakers. In the closing moments of the game, Rayman made a pair of layups but the team was unable to overcome the lead the Cardinals built in the first half. The game ended in a final score of 73-43.
Breaking Down the Game: Rayman led the team with 17 points in the game as she scored six field goals in the game and went 5-for-8 from the free throw line. The junior forward also added five rebounds and two blocks. Bray joined Rayman as the other Laker with a double-digit point total in the game. Bray posted a team-leading two three-pointers against the Cardinals while also totaling a team-best 10 rebounds. It marked Bray's first double-double of the season.
The Lakers finished the game with a 35.6 shooting percentage, going 16-for-45 in the game. On the other end of the floor, the Cardinals went 30-for-59 in the game to total a 50.8 shooting percentage. Saginaw Valley outrebounded Lake State, 37-25, in the game.
What's Next
The Lakers three-game GLIAC road trip will wrap up on Monday, Jan. 31 against Davenport University. The game, which was rescheduled following a postponement on Jan. 13, is set for a noon tipoff.
